so Nichole is reading first grade books (according to scholastic that is) so YAY!! right? so her teacher asigns reading groups of course, nichole is in the highest one. There are 3 other kids reading the same books as her. I know she is not slipping (like that is possible in kindergarten lol) since one kid used to be in her group but was moved to a different one a few weeks ago.
anyways, so if she is reading slightly above grade level, wouldn't you think her teacher would give her good grades?
she got 2 in reads left to right??? huh?? she can read the book herself, how can she be having a problem with it. oh and 4 means mastered, 3 is progressing, 2 means needs some assistance, and 1 is whatever.
she got a 4 in comprehension?? HOw can she get a mastered in comprehension but she can't read left to right??
weird right? And it's not about writing her letters backwards, that is a separate, and I get only getting a 3 in that. but it's kinda weird. or am i missing something?

You've mentioned that she'll read numbers backwards, like she'll say 31 is 13, for example. Do you notice her doing that with words? Maybe that's what the teacher is referring to? I wouldn't think it means that she doesn't know to read lines from left to right necessarily. Maybe she's mixing up the sounds in individual words and needs to be reminded?

Once she is reminded, then, she must understand what she's reading. That's great. If she wasn't, then the books the teacher is giving her wouldn't be appropriate for her. If she was decoding at a 1st grade level, but not understanding any of what she was decoding, then she wouldn't actually be reading at a 1st grade level, you know?

Anyway, if you still have questions, I'd ask the teacher. And I know it's difficult, especially with the first child and when you know what she's capable of, but those marks in K really don't mean much when you look at the big picture. If she's continuing to progress and the teacher doesn't see a real issue (I know you've wondered about dyslexia...maybe mention that to the teacher and see if that could explain what she's talking about as far as reading left to right), then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

A lot of times teachers will give a lower mark like that when it isn't a real grade based on a percentage so they have somewhere to go. If they get a 3 one quarter and then move to a 4 the next, it looks like they've progressed on paper. They sometimes don't want to give them all 4's right away. And sometimes it's a matter of something they're just introducing in class, so no one gets a 4 because they haven't covered it all yet (even though she might have already mastered it).

I've never found report cards particularly helpful. LOL

That is odd. When she reads at home, does she ever need help following the words? I would definitely ask the teacher what she is noticing

i agree about them not be helpful

and no she reads the wrods left to right with no issue. The only thing I can think of, is sometimes she doesn't point to the words as she is reading. if it's a bigger books, like more then a few sentences on the page, she will. but if it's pretty short, she just reads it. weird! I'll same something next grading period if it seems off again. Just seems add that she would get 2s in reading if she is reading above. I'm glad her teacher is pushing her though, I like that
