I was just wondering who has started potty training their LO? How did you start doing it?

We bought Emma a potty we just havent started teaching her. I would like for her to have the concept down by the time the new baby comes.

BTDT moms...how long does it normally take to have a child potty trained?

Any suggestions?! Thanks.

We started Holden when he was a year old. A little early, but he doesn't like being forced to do new things so I thought easing him into it would be the best way.

The most important thing is to be patient, because it most likely isn't going to happen overnight (although I always hear girls are easier than boys)

If you want to go full force right into it, taking your LO every hour, or every half an hour is the best way to go about it. Even going potty when they do helps encourage them and shows them what to do.
We taught Holden where his "peeper" is, and it took him a while but he knows how to push pee out. It just takes encouragement.
Poop.. we're not having much luck with (it was the first thing he did on the potty, and now he'd rather crap his diaper).

We also reward him with a fruit snack after every time he uses the potty.. never thought he'd be using it 12+ times a day. Just waiting on him to learn to hold it overnight, and to STOP peeing in his diaper in between potty times. I don't know how he has so much pee in him.

The way we eased into it was by going before and after snack/meal time.

It's also important to limit their water intake. A LO who runs around with a sippy all day is going to be constantly peeing. I let Holden have his water 10-15 minutes before potty time if he wants it.

Sorry that was discombobulated and confusing! We're still learning.

The same thing may not work for you! I just take things from here and there, try them, and keep doing what works.

I did start early too and she was 13 or 14 months at the time, but once it got cold and the footed pjs were being worn...it just got to be too much. We're slowing back into it now. I'm taking her every hour and sometimes she'll go...others time not. Yesterday, we had a great day and then not so much today. Just be persistent AND consistent. Ally knows the words potty, pee, and poo. Just gotta teach her what they are and when she's doing them!

We also have a celebratory dance/song for when she goes potty. I feel like such a dork when I'm doing it, but I can tell she LOVES it!

we do it too. Holden now stands up when he's done and claps his hands, looks at what he did in the potty and waits for me to make a fool of myself and then give him a treat. Then he goes tearing through the house naked from the waist down

We haven't even thought about potty training Robert yet....Ernest just turned 3 in October and didn't become fully potty trained until January....And only because he felt ready....Robert shows signs that he could be but I don't think he is ready yet....He is pretty stubborn and won't do anything until he feels like it....so there you go...stuck doing diapers a little while longer.

Jaslene is saying potty and she has taken her diaper off twice (right after she said "potty") and pooped all over my bed. I went out and bought her one that makes music everytime she goes. But, haven't used it yet. I'm having the most difficult time training my 3 year old.

We have been "sorta" potty training for a while. By sorta, i mean - not putting that much effort into a ritual type training. I just ask him throughout the day - Bubba - do u need to go to the toilet? Do u need to do wee? And he will either say No or run to the toilet. So whenever i put him on there he will go. Yay.
Sometimes he says yes just cos he wants to please me and then he will push and push until at least a little drop comes out!!! Aww.
The way and reason i started is because every single time he had finished his bath he would - without a doubt, do a wee on the floor. He didn't like doing this and i could tell he knew it was not what you were meant to do. (i think he was about 1) So i just bought a potty and put it in his room and then everytime he finished his bath i either put him on the potty or, as soon as he looked as though he was about to pee, said, do u wanna do a wee? And put him straight on it. It was as easy as that. And we have just gone casually from there.

We have 2 toilets in our house downstairs and i have a little toilet seat for each one (we rarely use the potty at all cos i didn't wanna have to re-train him to go from the potty to the toilet) If he is naked (it is warm here at the moment) and he is playing somewhere and i wanna be able to leave the room i will put the potty in there with him and tell him that if he wants to go and i am not there that he can go in the potty. And he does! The reason i also did this was because i noticed that if he was busy playing he was more likely to say No he didn't need to go to the toilet even if he did cos he didn't wanna stop playing. And then he would wee on the floor and feel bad! So that solved that issue.
Now, getting him to tell me when he needs to go if he has a nappy on is another story, but that's understandable.
Basically, if he has no nappy on and i ask him if he needs to go (to poo or wee) he will say yes and will then go on the toilet. If he has a nappy on and i haven't asked, he will just poo in that and not really care, but he will always tell me as soon as he has done a poo. If it is the type of poo that can be emptied into the toilet we will go straight there and put it in and clap and flush. If it's one of the other types (eww - u know what i mean) i will just go and change him like normal.
I think that if i actually put more time into it he would be trained by now - but i am happy with the casual progress we have made anyway and also i am being a little lazy.
The toilet to Jackson, btw, has always been somewhere completely normal for him to be. From the time he was really tiny he has pretty much come on every trip their with me (as a baby he was on my lap even) and then as he got older he stood next to me and passed me the paper and flushed the button! So he has always known that's what went on kwim?
Phew - long post! Sorry.....
I am not sure if that helps at all - xx

Has anyone heard of the "Potty Training Queen"? My SIL just sent me an email with her e-book on how to potty train in 3 days. It actually doesn't look that bad. If anyone wants a copy, PM me your email addy, and I will forward it your way.

We've been casually introducing potty time here. He goes in with daddy as much as possible and Lord knows hes in the bathroom with me every. single. time. We haven't gotten a potty yet but he thinks is fun to sit on the big potty.
For me when I was first training Mckenna I would have the potty in the living room and when she was watching tv she would sit on it. Once she was peeing in it and seeing and feeling the connection it got a little easier. Thats when YOU basically have to get trained to take your child to the bathroom every 30 minutes.
And you have to find what works for you and your child, especially reward-wise. Stickers/m&m's/reading a book, something is going to make them want to use the potty. Just be patient it takes a LONG time!
I'm probably going to really start once it warms up a little more and he can run around outside naked. He can pee out there to his hearts content!
I just wanted to add I really dont' think pull-ups are helpful at ALL! Most kids treat them like diapers. Using real underwear (and having to do a LOT of wash) worked much better. They really do need to 'feel' wet, and not have the security of something similar to a diaper.

We have been introducing the potty since forever, but haven't actually started to train her. Like Rebecca (rebeccajanedesign), the toilet has always been something normal for Jorja, and my son when he was a baby. Right from very early on, i've always taken them to the bathroom with me, sometimes DH would sit with them on the side of the bathtub, or i would sit them in their little chair. Jorja gets excited when she hears me pee......she claps and says yay for me! I always tell her "mommy's a big girl, mommy pee pee potty!" Before every bath, i put her on the big toilet, with a potty seat while i run her bath. I tell her to pee pee potty, and then when the tub is finished, i will give her a peice of tissue, and she drops it in the toilet, and i will wipe her and tell her shes a big girl for pee pee potty (even if she didn't do anything). I am finding it hard to know when she is peeing on the toilet tho, since i can't see it. So we decided to buy her a potty. It should be here soon, and then i think we are gonna jump into training her. She knows the concept i am quite sure. She tells me when she wants her diaper changed, brings me a diaper and cloth to clean her. The other day, after a poo, she said "i poo". Now its just teaching her that when she gets that 'feeling' to go to the bathroom instead of doing it in a diaper.

My son was very easy to train! SUPER easy! He was day and night trained by 18 months. We took him to the potty every 30 mins for a few days, and he quickly got the hang of it. Then we would go every 45 mins. and we pushed it up and up, then suddenly he was telling us when he needed to go, whether by body movements or verbally. I plan to use this same technique with Jorja. We never done pull-ups, i dont believe in them. We started with cloth training pants, and then after getting the hang of it, we went to underwear. We have panties ready to go now for her. She loves them, she likes to wear them over her diaper!

My biggest peice of advice, is PATIENCE AND CONSISTENCY! Its pointless to start if you aren't gonna keep up with it. And yes you will be doing more laundry, and cleaning up pee more, but its all a part of it! It wont last forever!

Good Luck!

I introduced the potty seat when she was about 10 or 11 months old. She'll go on it most of the time if I'm letting her run around without a diaper. I just introduced it to her and showed her how it goes and let her take her time with it.

Now if she starts to poop in her diaper she will usually let me know and she'll finish going on the potty. Pee is a bit harder. She's also just started to let me know when she wants to go potty by either putting the seat on the toilet herself, or running into the bathroom with a diaper on.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it's to the same "We Did it!" music that's on Dora! Even better, right?! "You sat down and you went peepee/poopoo in the potty! You did it! You did it! HOORAY!"
