I have a question for you since you just went trough this. How long did it take for the engorgement to go away when you stopped pumping? I could never produce much milk at all, but this is the second day of pain...ugh

about 2 days... but i weaned myself off.. I started pumping 3 or 4 times a day for about 3 days, then 1 to 2 times a day for 2 or 3 days . . I didn't do that on purpose. I was getting discouraged because I never had much milk and was feeding her more and more formula... then we decided my milk was hurting her... so I was slowly giving up....
I hear that cabbage really helps! I'm sorry it's so painful for you

See thats me..we have been slowly giving him more and more formula and he seems to handle it better and thats why I have given up..not to mention because I couldn't produce very much anyway. I felt like I was wasting my time.
Thanks for that info...I have cut down to pumping twice a day to help with the pressure and only pumping for like 2 minutes at a time...hopefully tomorrow will be a better today. Today doesn't seem as bad as yesterday

I also read that if you take a hot shower and just let the milk express on its own it helps
I was feeling so guilty about my milk supply... but then my pediatrician told me they were going through the same thing and his wife's milk is just not coming in.. to not feel bad. I hope you aren't feeling bad. It's okay to give him formula.

I will admit that it was a hard choice to make, but like you I tried everything under the sun to boost my supply and it just wasn't happening. It makes me feel better that at least I was able to give him some breast milk to get him off to a good start. He is still on nutramigen and its doing great..although I have to say it sure makes for some stinky poops..

I wish the fenugreek and mother's milk tea worked for me.... I'm like you! They got the important stuff for a few weeks and we tried everything we could.
Yes! Nutramigen produces stinky poops!!! Nutramigen is on sale by the way at target (at least it is here) for $22 and change. We bought 4 cans... I'm assuming the gentle ease would be the next step after nutramigen so we bought a can of that as well (on sale too). Just a heads up =)
How do you pronounce Nutramigen??
I was saying NUTRA-MI-GEN wth a long I sound but my dr pronounces it NU-TRAM-I-GEN with a short I sound.

Thanks for the heads up on that as far as what he may go on next. Maybe he will just have to be on it for about a month from what I read anyway. Not sure how they determine if they are ready to come off of it.
I pronounce it with a short I sound. Thanks about it being on sale. Davis goes through 2 cans in about 8 days. I have noticed that its very hard to get it to mix up good too. Yesterday I went and applied for WIC since I was thinking about not going back to work. We barely made it and I mean barely made it..you should try for it since you and paul aren't married yet...anyway, I had to have the doctor fax over the prescription to the WIC office showing that he is on it. They will give you 8 cans a month of formula. With what Danika and Davis are on, it will help out ALOT

Your welcome...in our area it is in the health department but not sure about your area. Just call and make an appointment. I had to ofcourse show DH's income for the month of April since we are married...and I had to bring a copy of the babys birth certificate and bring something that showed my address. But it may be different where you are. Plus you can get it on you until Danika is 6 months old. they give you vouchers and they have milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, juice and all different things..You can pick it up at walmart, your grocery store or where ever. I just went for Davis but they kept telling me that I should just let them sign me up too so I did.
I picked up his formula with it last night at walmart and the 3 cans would have cost me $75 and it didn't cost me anthing because i had the vouchers.

that's awesome! I called and they were so rude!!! I couldn't believe how they treated me... like I was someone not worthy of having a polite conversation. I asked for a location closer to my home and they transferred me to a voice mail. I'll call back again tomorrow. I will ask to speak to a manager this time

I don't mean to butt in, but I am having problems stopping too. I had to give Xander bottles with formula because he wasn't putting on weight initially. Then he preferred the bottles so I wasn't able to bf that much. And I couldn't really pump because I can't pump while holding him, so I wasn't able to do it as much as I needed to. I really didn't want to stop, but it wasn't working out and my supply has been really dwindling down. It makes me sad though. But I decided to slowly stop, and Alexander has decided the breast is the only thing that will calm him when he's screaming! I've even tried taking off my shirt and positioning him like I will bf, but then giving him a pacifier because when he does this he's not usually hungry. But I haven't been able to fool him yet. Have your babies had trouble transitioning? I'm at the point where I want to stop but I don't want it to be so hard on him.

I didn't have to transition Danika. I pumped and fed from a bottle from the beginning. My friend started transition with those shields that go over your breast... I hope you have luck. This site can be helpful http://www.breastfeeding.com/

I don't blame you..I would ask to speak to the manager too..some people are so rude. But yes...I would call back, especially since her formula is so expensive, every little bit helps

I didn't have a transition either. I pumped and put it in the bottle from the start too.

WIC is wonderful, i've had it since i was pregnant. Here in texas they kind of push you into it once they find out your pregnant. But they are really rude! They act like they are better than you cause your asking for help, every state funded program is like that. But it's worth it. I get 9 cans of formula and it's a life saver cause i'm not working.
I used cabbage leaves to relieve the pressure and it worked. Cold showers also work.

We were able to qualify, too, since I'm not working now. It saves us about $125 in formula every month. And like Samantha, they had me sign myself up, too, so we get the free milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, and juice. I found out I could have signed Dane up too, but he wasn't with me that morning. I think when I go back to get my next vouchers that I might take him with me to sign him up. He would qualify until Jan when he turns five. We go through a lot of milk, cheese, cereal, and juice in our house, and with the new baby and having to buy diapers and getting ready to pay for day care, every bit counts!

I stopped BF about a week and 1/2 ago and I had major PAIN for 2 days. I took advil every 4 to 6 hrs and it seemed to help. I also put a hot wash cloth on them in the evening to help with the pain. By the 3rd day, they were feeling much better.
