I have been hearing that you can't use even fragrance free-alcohol free wipes on newborns, is this true, do I really have to use cotton balls or gauze? Also I love the smell of baby lotions and soaps, can I bathe (sponge bath at first of course) my baby with this and apply lotion at newborn stages?

I have never heard of that. I always used wipes on my kids since they were born (fragrance free) and never had a problem. I dont remember when I started using lotion though.

I've never heard that about the baby wipes. I know that with a boy who is circ'd you don't want to use the disposable wipes while they are healing because the solution can sting. But you are having a girl so that isn't an issue.
Also, I think you can use the baby washes and lotions as soon as you want to. Just make sure they are good quality and formulated for baby. I'm sure there is alot of information out there about the chemicals in the wipes and the shampoos and lotions but each mom has to make her own decision. In my experience newborn baby skin can get dry and irritated easily so I like to use baby aveeno products at first. DS is prone to dry patches and excema so I use alot of eucerin and bag balm on him which work great but they don't have any nice smell which I always miss.
I switched to cloth wipes instead of the disposables but missed the smell nice factor of the disposables so now I pre-moisten all my cloth wipes with a solution of water with a few squirts of Johnson's baby soap mixed in and store them in a plastic container so they are all ready for me when its time to change a diaper or wipe a messy face/hands.

I haven't heard anything about that, so maybe it's a personal preference? I know some people just don't use disposables.

I will be using reg wipes as needed for newborn, and baby lotion. I want to use the regular johnsons kind, but if this LO's skin is as sensitive as ds's was, I will also be using aveeno. I love aveeno baby wash, so that's what we'll probably use for baths.

Well they use baby wash and lotion in the hospital when they give the baby a bath so it should be fine. I will only be using Aveeno baby wash and lotion d/t dd having sensitive skin and ezcema, and I miss the baby lotion smell.

We always used baby wipes on Brinlee, and I always bought the ones that smelled the best to me. I love Pampers wipes, Huggies are ok, but I do prefer Pampers.

I used regular baby products on the baby as far as soap goes.... but I did find some of it to have too strong of a scent. Especially the Lavender by Gerber....... OMG it was horrible (again, IMO). For newborns, I really like the disposable wash cloths that come with soap already on them, made by Huggies.

I've never heard of that. I used the Pampers Sensitive wipes on Claire from day 1 and gave her baths using Aveeno baby wash and lotion with no problems.

I think its a personal preference, I use the Huggies natural care sensitive skin wipes when they are newborns, and i lotion to keep their skin moist.

I just picked up some Pampers Sensitive baby wipes and refill since they were on sale at Target and I had planed on using them. I also picked up some Huggies Cucumber and Green Tea bath wash & lotion for the little guy. I love the smell!

DS had such sensitive skin that he developed a bleeding rash from the sensitive wipes. I used cut up handiwipes and water to clean him for about a month and then moved back to wipes. I will use the cut up handi wipes and water for this one and try to avoid the whole bad rash thing. I think some people just have super sensitive skin.

I used wipes & wash on Andrew from the start (sensative wipes & J&J wash or the Huggies wash cloths). Baby lotion once his skin started peeling (about 3-4 days old).

They use them at the hospital so I don't know why you can't. Heck, when they gave Maddy her first bath at the hospital it was with those soap wipe things that lather up when you add water..

I think it's also a personal preference. I only use botanical products for our family so I can avoid the chemicals. The no tears stuff freaks me out. The only thing I do use from the regular brands would be the wipes. Though I see they've come out with "natural" wipes that have less chemicals in them so I plan on researching those. And I also use disposable diapers instead of cloth.

You can use whatever you want on a baby. If they get a rash or irritation, then change what you are using, but there's no universal can or can't.
