So, Kaylee has her first cold. Last night was rough, up every few hours in bed with me then she would get squirmy and she'd go back in her bed. She doesn't have a temp though, just a very small cough with a runny nose.
Anyone know anything that will comfort them besides motrin or tylenol? I have only given Kaylee tylenol once when the doc told me I should the first time she got shots. I dont like medicine myself, so I am really weird about it, especially with kaylee.
Cheryl, i know that you use a lot of natural stuff? Any recommendations? She has been on vit d drops for about two months now, but that's all!
I would try some baby vicks on her back and chest and some regular vicks on her feet under socks. Keep an eye on it because thats how Jake's ear and throat infection started. I've been giving him tylenol at night because his ear is really hurting him at night. I think sometimes we need to give them something for pain. Its so unfair for babies, it seems the first year of their lives is so painful. between the birth, gas, teething, and bumps and bruises it sure seems like it could get pretty hard on them. I hope she feels better soon. I'm sure Cheryl will have a few ideas for you.
We use saline drops. If her nose is stuffy it helps loosen it up so you can suck it out. A humidifier at night might help too. You can also use baby Vicks to help her breathe at night as BrittM suggested. Those are the only things I can think of. If she has no fever then it is probably a little cold and will pass within a week. I hope she feels better soon.
I don't know how you feel about homeopathic remedies, that's the only real thing I know of. Hylands makes vitamin C tablets for kids.Or you can use powdered C, 500mg a day. They sell Children's Echinacea and you can give her 1 drop of that per 5 lbs 3 times a day. I put that in a little water to dilute a bit. Either of those won't relieve symptoms, but they will boost her immune system and can help her get better easier/faster.
The thing with homeopathy is there are different things for different stages of a cold.
stage 1- clear runny nose allium cepa without fever or belladonna with fever and clear runny nose.
once the mucus changes color these are no longer useful.
for stage 2 - thicker discharge and clingy behavior give pulstilla
stage 3- thick, green persisting nasal discharge give Kali Bichromicum
there is also some acupressure info I have but if Kaylee is anything like Cadie she won't tolerate it. if you think she will, I can post that too.
Walter just got over his first cold. We didn't do any meds, just the humidifier, nasal spray and a bulb syringe before bed, and J&J vapor rub on his chest a few times a night with his jammies unzipped at the top so he could smell it.
I thought about doing some homeopathic remedies but Walter's doctor talked me out of it since a lot of those have not been determined safe in babies this age. If you notice on the packaging, a lot of them say for kids 2 and up. Instead, I offered Walter baby foods high in vitamin C, like blueberries, or apples, or whatever I could find.
Good luck! It's no fun, I hope it passes soon.

When Lily has a cold, we use the humidifier at night but we also put a few rolled up blankets underneath the mattress at the head of her bed. It elevates her head a little to ease the congestion. I hope Kaylee feels better soon!
You give less of the dose given for babies under 1. It is obviously a matter of opinion, but there is nothing wrong with being cautious. Less of anything is almost always better! I do trust homepathic remedies but of course I know most don't. Especially conventionally trained docs.
edited to add - I mean less medicine in general is almost always better when it comes to symptom relief vs side effects
I hope she feels better soon. I swear by Oreganol now. You can get it at most health food stores. You just take one little drop and mix it with one little drop of olive oil and rub it on their chests ( i use it too). It helps soo much. Though they do smell like a loaf of italian bread for awhile.
here is a pic of what to look for.
It was recommended by our Pediatrician.
Thank-you so much for the advice. I am at work now, I hated leaving her while she wasn't feeling good as she cried when I left But, I have to wait to use sick hours until tomorrow night because I was suppose to have a sitter while DH goes out of town and I do not want want to leave a sick baby with my very nice sitter at night. So, I ran out today and we got some baby vabor rub, saline drops and DH is on his way to buy a humidifier. Do we get a warm or a cool mist one? I asked the pharm at CVS and she looked a little confused, so I was like forget that, I will ask you guys!!
Cheryl, I don't know much about homeopathic remedies, but am not against learning about it. Where would you get the stuff for it? Right now, she has a runny nose that is clear and a mild, very mild cough but still no fever! I grabbed the Vit C tablets, but haven't talked to DH about using them. I feel like since she is a month away from being a year old that it would be ok to give it to her now at a smaller dose.
Heather, thank-you! I didn't have time to go to the Vitamin Shoppe before work today, but will be going tomorrow to pick up what you recommended. Kristen, thanks for reminding me to keep the zipper down a little bit, I would have forgot to tell DH that. I am glad that Walter is feeling better! Thank-you to Michelle, Courtney and Britt as well!!
I also wanted to add that I by no means think that tylenol or motrin are bad. I have had a fear of traditional medicine ever since my mom passed away from a combination of medicine that stopped her heart.
We got this humidifier at Target, and it works great. I bought another general humidifier from Target when he was born and it was awful, so we stopped using one altogether until he got sick this time. I don't know anything about cool mist humidifiers but those sound nice!

That is too cute! I love the frog. DH just went to the store and didn't know if it was a cool or warm and got warm after I told him a cool mist?? He drives me crazy sometimes!!
