I was just researching this online. I have started using fast flow nipples now, and she sucks back the bottle in NO time....she is also taking more lately. She's gone from eating 4-5oz every 3 hours to 5-7oz every 3-4 hours. She did start eating more even with the slow flow nipple, it happened after her 12 week growth spurt, she suddenly seemed to need more milk, especially at night before bed. Anyway, I've read that using fast flow nipples can lead to overfeeding. Anyone heard of this? I'm thinking of going right back to slow flow....she's only been using fast flow for 1 day. I can't find medium flow nipples anywhere, I might have to order them off the Playtex website.

I've never heard that, but I've never researched it either. We use medium nipples (from BRU) during the day and slow ones at night because she chokes as she falls asleep.

It makes sense only because just like us, it takes babies 20 minutes to realize they are full so if she is drinking it faster than 20 minutes, she is going to keep drinking because her belly doesn't feel full. A lot of time Max will eat and cry for a few minutes after he drinks his bottle because he doesn't realize he is full yet. After 5 minutes he is completely settled. I've tried a few times giving him more thinking he was really hungry but he just ended up spitting it all up again. I would go back to the slow flow and see how much she drinks and judge it by that. If she is still drinking the 5-7 oz then it has nothing to do with the nipple though going back to the slow flow may make her angry, you may need to find the medium or poke a bigger hole in the slow flow.

I used the fast flow nipples for 3 days and found that he was eating more, spitting up WAY more, and alot more fussy. We switched back. He seems very happy with the slow flow. With the fast flow he was done with a 7 oz bottle in 10 minutes. That can't be too good for him. I don't know when I will try again...

Not sure about it causing overeating, but we tried the medium flow with sarah and she was gulping it down then spitting it up. So we went back to the stage 1.

It might still be too soon for her if it makes it THAT quick to drink a bottle. It still takes Abby 15-20 minutes with the medium. I can see how the fast might lead to overeating though...

I used a fast flow last night for his bottle (he gets one after his cereal) and he downed 3oz in under 5 minutes - I was shocked - he seemed to have handled it okay though.

I can't find the medium anywhere either

My bottles (Playtex) don't come in anything but slow & fast. Maddy was spitting up from the slow (gulping too much air) and now the fast she can down her 4 oz in 5 minutes (or less!). I bought medium for another kind of nipple and it doesn't work at all...that's what the box of bottles said but I didn't believe it. I just don't know what to do. She actually VOMITED last night b/c it was too fast for her. I'm calling the ped tomorrow but I didn't know if anyone here had any advice!!

I use the playtex drop ins, and mt Babies R Us has the medium flow. It is the orthodontic nipple though, not the natural latch. They have the online too. That is what we are using for Zoe for daycare, because that is the only nipple she will take.
