I had my Level 2 ultrasound today, and first of all, the baby is fine. She or he looked healthy and active, and was right at the 50% mark for growth and weight. I did not find out the sex since that little one would just not give it up. They really tried to find out for me too, and she or he would just not uncross their legs.

Now the bad news. My placenta didn't look good at all. It has already started seperating from the wall of my uterus, leaving a large blood clot where it used to be. The baby's cord is hooked to the very edge instead of the middle, a further indication that the main part of the placenta is not healthy.

My other kids were born at 31, 29,and 27 weeks so I do have a history of preterm babies. I never had any reason why this happened though...this is the first problem that has ever been found. I guess the question is whether or not this is why all my kids were early, or whether this is something new that has only happened with this baby.

I guess the new plan is just to get to 24 weeks and then they will monitor the placenta frequently to make sure it is still working. Even if I don't go into preterm labor though, at some point the baby will have trouble growing with this placenta in place.

They also think the problem is genetic, and Beth and Carrie will have a 50% chance of having the same issues. As of right now there is no treatment or cure....maybe things will be different for them.

Well that is some crummy news for sure! Although, I'm so glad your little peanut if healthy (even if he or she is so shy!!). I suppose with your history of preemies, the silver lining is that you still have 3 (4!) healthy children who survived and thrived even when coming into the world a little early! I hope you have a very uneventful remainder of your pregnancy, and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your little bean!

That is scary. But the good news is, you obviously make tough babies! Take care, and KUP.

How scary Claire! I will be praying for you and your little baby!!! I know you'll make it well past 24 weeks. I'm glad they found out about the problem now so you can be monitored closely. I hope and pray your baby will continue growing well past 30 weeks.
