I am having a bit of a rough pregnancy. I havenít posted anything, well, because I didnít want to burden everyone with this, with everything else going on with our toddlers and families. We now have a bit of clarity, so I thought I would share......

During my 18 week scan they found that I have a SUA, a Single Umbilical Artery - unfortunately, I didnít find out until my next appointment 2 Ĺ weeks later. What is Single Umbilical Artery? Normally, when the umbilical cord develops, it forms three vessels, two arteries and one vein. However, in some cases like mine, just one artery develops - why this occurs is not entirely known.

We were told that up to 25% of babies born with SUA have birth defects, including chromosomal and other abnormalities. These can include Downs, trisomy 13 or trisomy 18. So that was the first round of u/s, to rule out any Ďabnormalitiesí. Thankfully we were cleared on that front with everything looking fine. However, the most common pregnancy complications that occur in infants with SUA are heart defects, gastrointestinal tract abnormalities, respiratory system deficiencies, urinary tract malformations and problems with the central nervous system. So in the last 3 weeks, I have had 2 in-depth u/s looking at lungs, bladder and kidneys and 2 Fetal ECHOS for her heart. Baby Olive is less than helpful during the u/s and ECHOs! She doesnít want to move and keeps her head down and arms wrapped around her chest. At the first ECHO it took 2 technicians to get blood flow pictures, they did as much as they could but I had to come back 1 week later for another look. Needless to say getting pictures / sounds of her heart has been less than successful.

I had an appointment with my Dr. Last week to review the ECHO results and the fetal Cardiologist is unhappy with the pictures. So they are suggesting that once Olive is born she have a full heart workup / ECHO to make sure everything is fine. I am happy with the care I have received, and thankful that it seems like we have dodged a bit of a bullet here. But, and there always is a BUT....this has put me as a High Risk C-section. Meaning I have to go into the city to have this baby, which might be earlier than we think. The other large issues that are of concern with SUA are low birth weight and IUGR. Totally not the end of the world, but totally sucky.

At this point Olive is measuring 2 weeks bigger than where we are, so that is good news. I am now on 2 week appointments and u/s every 3 weeks. Good news is that I get to see her more!! It has been a bit of a rough ride emotionally, with the results and tests and specialists, but I feels so blessed to live somewhere that this care and attention is part of normal care.

And to top it off, at my routine appointment last week, they couldnít find a heartbeat. 2 Dr.s and 40 minutes of searching they finally pulled out the portable u/s, and discovered her heartbeat at 112. Unhappy with that number they sent me for a stress test. Her movement wasnít great, so I am now doing daily kick counts. Needless to say this little girl has us hopping around already!

Have a cookie if you made it this far!!

I am so sorry you are going through this. Please never think that in any way you will burden us. I will keep you and her in my thoughts and prayers and hope that from here on out she lets you relax just a bit before her arrival. I am glad you are getting the care you need and that it is so available to you.

Oh, Andrea - I HATE to think of you having to go through this and feeling like you couldn't vent! Please know that we are here to listen anytime. With the number of moms in this PR who have experienced complications and problems with pregnancies and kids, you couldn't find a better place for sympathy.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. If it's any consolation I delivered Jack in the city, and while it was frustrating to have a kajillion different doctors, me and Jack got SUCH great care from the nurses. They are AWESOME.

Soon this will be over - you just need to make it another 15 weeks and Olive will be safe on the outside. I'm sending you guys tons of love and support, and please feel free to come to us anytime. We're all rooting for you girls!!

Oh my goodness, hun. Don't ever feel like you'd be a burden on us. Being pregnant is stressful enough, let alone when there are scares like the ones you're experiencing.

I'm so glad that you told us, and even more glad that they haven't found any problems other than with the cord. Please keep us updated, and I'll keep you in my T&P's.

Stay tough, mama and Miss Olive!

HUGS. everyone needs to vent. Never a burden. A gf of mine went through this and her LO did have IUGR - born at 34 weeks just after our LOs were born, she was 3lbs 4oz.

13 days in the NICU, home with no problems, and she is now on every single milestone and even super tall and verbal for her age!

*hugs*

BTW, Jack is proof that IUGR is NOT a permanent condition, nor is it a guarantee of any long term problems or complications. He wasn't even ON the chart when he was born, chilled out at the 3rd percentile for ages, and now is comfortably settled in around the 40th.

Hugs, mom!
