Justin got his first deer yesterday. I am really looking forward to the meat, though we don't exactly agree how to have it processed. I wanted burger and summer sausage, he wants deer bacon.... I think we will get breakfast sausage, burger and bacon. Hopefully he gets another (he is sure he will) and he will process that one himself and will cut some loins and such too.
I am not into hunting, though I used to go as a kid but never shot anything myself, and actually have a strong aversion to guns, but I am proud of him for bringing home the bacon, hehe. And I know he is excited so that is important.
But I do worry b/c he has already started talking about when Thea will be old enough to go with him. I just want to tell him, NEVER!

Yay for getting a deer! My dad was a huge hunter and I grew up on quail, pheasant, elk, duck and deer. Haven't had any deer since he died when I was 9 though. I'm not big into guns/hunting, but I do think it's great if you go out and kill your own food and use it. It's much more sustainable then most of us buying meat from the grocery store.

Mmmmm. Deeeer. Super delicious! Congratulations to Justin!
I'm definitely not a hunter, and I loathe hunting for sport - but hunting for food is something else entirely. My stepdad and brothers usually get a deer apiece every fall, and they give us some burger and a couple of steaks or a roast. Oh man. YUM. Mom's got some waiting in her freezer for me - can't wait to get it this week!!!
What's your favorite way to use burger? I'm always looking for new ideas! I like making tacos with it. It makes an absolutely delicious taco! WAY better than beef, and it doesn't need nearly as much spice added to it to taste right.

One thing I like is just making plain old burgers - seasoned with lemon pepper. Lemon pepper is my favorite seasoning for about any deer meat!
And my dad uses it in chili a lot instead of other ground meat, sometimes with some spicy sausage to (3 parts deer burger and 1 part sausage).
I also like it in shepard's pie.
Just found this site with a bunch of recipes that look good - I am sure I will be tring quite a few this year.Backwoods Bound Deer Recipes I have made a version of the bbq bicuits before but with my homemade wheat biscuit dough and ground venison instead of the shredded roast it calls for. Quick and yummy!

Justin should come here - there's a huge buck in our yard every day who eats the apples that fall off the tree. I know he's a nuisance, and probably delicious, but we all love watching him.

I don't hunt, but I admire people who hunt for food (though not for sport). Some friends used to hunt wild boar nearby, and the meat was wonderful!

I seriously almost peed my pants laughing at this!

Oh man, what an awesome website! Don't know why I never thought of making a good stew out of the steak meat... D'oh! Hopefully mom will have some steak she wants to part with, 'cause that sounds delicious right now! And the lemon pepper burgers sound good too - might have to try this with the beef I have in the fridge for tomorrow night. YUM.

Wild boar is yummy! My friend's husband had his name drawn for this wild boar hunt. They have too many in one area and they draw names, if your name is drawn then you can go up whenever and hunt as many as you want. They're planning to dig up their backyard (about to re-do it anyway) and do the whole pit and everything to cook it. The funny thing is they're Caucasian, so they asked me how to cook a whole boar/pig that way since I'm Asian...but I have no clue It's more a Chinese and Hawaiian thing. But I can't wait to eat it!

Bahahaha!

I'm so jealous of everyone's hunting stories! I was supposed to go this year for the first time, but had to miss my hunter safety class, which rules that out. I love love love venison! Yum!

I grew up on deer meat too. Along with wild turkey, pheasant, quail, rabbit, etc. It actually took me awhile to get used to hamburger meat because we rarely ate it as a kid. We had deer steaks alot, and my mom would make a great deer chili. She also has a special processor to make deer jerky, yum!!

Congrats to Justin! Nobody in my family really hunts, but I've had elk once... in jerky form!
