It was inevitable. I caught Josiah's cold. I'm just hoping I can kick it quickly. I'm supposed to be singing at our town tree lighting this Saturday!

Oh no! I hope you are feeling tip top in no time and that your voice is back to normal for singing,
I caught Abby's cold too. So, now we are two sniveling sneezing co-hosts.

I just talked to my aunt, and apparently almost everyone in the family has a bad cold, so even though we're sick, we're still going to Thanksgiving dinner! Almost everything is ready made from the store if it isn't a cooked dish because no one is healthy enough to be preparing food!

Hope you feel better soon! Pop some Vitamin D, it's proven to help fight colds/flu better than Vitamin C

Ditto the vitamin D. That is what I swear by for myself and family.
We rarely get sick..and when it is a cold its gone in two days or less with minimal
suffering.
And I'm not talking the usual 400 IU's that everyone says is "enough"..
people are not getting enough...even those of us living in a sunny climate.
Dh takes 6000 Iu, Kaylee takes 4000..5000 if we are going to be in a public place..
I take 8000 but I am nursing and need to pass it to baby.

I hope you're feeling better Sarah. Leigh is sick too, so I'm sure the rest of us are next! Hoping we're all healthy for Thanksgiving.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but you can OD on vit D. You can OD on A, D, E, and K, because your body can't get rid of the excess like it can other vitamins.

Lisa, if you are vitamin D deficient (which most of us are), I've heard the standard treatment is about 3 months of very large quantities of vitamin D... I think my mom was prescribed 10,000 IU a day. Hmmm... guess I need to do a little research! I have a bottle of vitamin D in the cupboard, but I always forget to take it with my prenatal! I used to give Josiah those Vitamin D drops, but haven't been doing that lately. Josiah is better than he was Saturday, and my cold is here, but not nearly as bad as I expected! As of last night, I could still sing. However, we may not be singing for the tree lighting ceremony... if it is raining, the sound equipment can't go outdoors, and our singing gig is cancelled. We have a rehearsal from 3-4:30 on Saturday, and then our director will make the call about whether or not we tromp up the hill for the ceremony.

Yes you can OD on all vitamins but it takes something like 50,000 IU's over months before you OD on D.

I take 2000IU of Vitamin D daily on the advice of my OB and my regular doctor as well. The girls take about 1000IU daily (Vi a little less since she doesn't always eat the vitamins), again on the advice of their pediatrician and children's dietician.

The Institute of Medicine has the tolerable level being 2500IU for kids 1-3, 3000IU for kids 4-8 and 4000IU for ages 9-71+. My doctor told me I could take more than 2000IU, but I get some from my prenatal as well, plus foods and the sun (sometimes).

Sarah, here's a good article from Harvard University's School of Public Health on supplementing with Vitamin D: Vitamin D and Health - What Should I Eat? - The Nutrition Source - Harvard School of Public Health

It includes info on safe levels to take, and why the current recommendation is probably too low for most people.

I very rarely get sick at all since taking supplements, same with the girls. DH doesn't take them and he catches everything.
