Honestly, this is something I really haven't "practiced" with Dominic. This week I think was the first time ever and it was so frustrating. He just could not figure out how to hold them or how to make them open & close. Guess I'm wondering whether or not this is a do-able skill at this age.
Cait can use scissors. But at this age, it's about a 50/50 split with her cousins- some could, some couldn't. I'm guessing it's a skill that comes at different ages for each kid. No worries.
it is doable (I teach 2.5 year olds) but it is a skill that takes a lot of practice. Max can cut but not exactly on the line but close enough. He gets frustrated because he is a perfectionist and wants to cut exactly on the line and when he can't gets upset. I would just give him scissors and let him cut paper anyway he wants until he gets more famliar with it and then work on the "right" way to cut.
I don't let them play with scissors often. They could use more practice. They tend to start off fine, then when I turn my back, they slice up each other's artwork, the tablecloth, their clothes etc. Sometimes they use two hands to hold the scissors, sometimes one, it depends.

We have just started using her scissors fairly recently. The first pair we tried were horrible and she couldn't use them with one hand. I got a new pair of Fiskars safety scissors and they are so much better!
I still have to remind her the right way to hold them sometimes, and she can kind of cut along a line but not super well. I just let her practice cutting paper up however she wants and she gets more and more control each time. She also loves cutting and gluing. She says she is making cards for people. So she cuts and folds and glues a lot.
yes NAte can, every week at sunday school they cut out something from the story, and he has really gotten very good at it in the last 6 months.
