I know many of you have probably already seen this. And I'm really not looking for thoughts on the idea of the mom breastfeeding a 3 year old (I think we as a PR have been together long enough to know where everyone stands on that). But what do you think about the photo itself? The style, the set up, the stance of the mom & son? Do you think a photo like this helps or hurts the case of breastfeeding?

I am not fond of the way this photo was done personally. It doesn't show the intimacy that so many talk about with breastfeeding. I think it was done this way to inspire debate.

The picture is not what bothers me as much as the title. It sort of implies you are NOT "mom enough" if that isn't something you do...

But yes, I believe they are trying to sell magazines, so putting a picture & title out like that will likely sell more copies.

I have to agree about the title.....like I am not a good enough mom because I failed at breast feeding. I think the picture is horrible. #1 He looks like a 5 year old, not a 3 year old. #2 No one breast feeds like that.

I agree that the title AND the picture are ridiculous. And that's coming from the mama who BF'd the longest in our PR I just don't see the need to sensationalize something that should be seen as a completely mainstream and legitimate parenting style. And to alienate those who choose to parent differently by implying they are "less of a mother" is horrible. And honestly, I feel sorry for the child whose mother willingly let them be a poster child for extended bf-ing. My personal opinion is that bf-ing is a special relationship between mother and child, and that by throwing her son in the spotlight, she is turning this into something a little less "theirs" and using a minor to make a big statement. I don't agree with putting kids in the spotlight like that.

I like it. I think society as a whole views breastfeeding as something to be done in secret or even ashamed of, which made me feel like a 2nd class citizen when I was breastfeeding. This picture flies in the face of that mentality. Sure women don't really breastfeed this way, and not all women breastfeed, but I don't think that is the point. I think the point is to show that women should be proud of breastfeeding and are tired of being ashamed of their choices. It reminds me of the Rosie the Riveter - more of a girl-power, or in this case mom-power, thing.
