We had a company come out to do a chimney sweep. Our chimney was inspected and a new cap installed when we bought the house 18 months ago and it had apparently never been used before - the fireplace was in new condition.
This company tried to tell us that we needed a new cap, that the one was dirty (?) and that the top needed a silicone seal to 'prevent' water proofing, that they couldn't vaccume the pit b/c we had burned a fire the previous day (gee then tell us when we make the appt) and that the cost would be over $310 - the sweep we hired them to do was $45.
Brian told them the cap was less than 18 month old and under warranty, instead of removing it from their estimate they asked him to pretend a senior lived in the house so they could give us a 10% discount (?) *** We have the original invoice of the repair from the previous homeowner of the work done and it's guaranteed!
Bri said he had a bad feeling they were scaming us and I agreed and we told them to just leave. so they did after saying that we shouldn't use our fireplace and marking our estimate "inspection failed" with a big red stamp like 5 times. Jerks. Liars.
I went on Angies List and joined and found another company with great reviews. When Brian talked to the owner, the owner said "you could have told me that story and I could have told you what company it was. I've received over a dozen calls of people just like you who told them to leave and called me and you are right, they are scammers" and told him some horror stories of elderly people they tried to scam.
So this guy is coming out next weekend and will do the job for a bit more ($99) but without trying to rob us.
