I have had a cold and sore throat for a few days now. Last night my fever was about 100. I took regular strength tylenol the lower the fever. I am so scared this illness will hurt the baby. Does anybody know about sickness and first trimester? The internet scares the heck out of me! I need some reassurance!!! Thanks.

If you are using any cough drops, look on the package first! Some have a warning for you NOT to take them while you are pregnant. But they will say right on the package if you can take them or not. As far as your fever, I had to deal with this for a while myself earlier on. If your fever goes above 101.7 and stays elevated, you need to go see your doctor (or the ER if your doctor can't get you in the same day). Just take it easy and get LOTS of rest! With making a baby AND fighting off your illness, your body is working much overtime. If you are concerned, don't hesitate to call your doctor. It is much easier to call your doctor that to search on the Internet -- believe me, I know how upset it can make you and how paranoid you can get! If you haven't seen your doctor yet, that's still OK. You can call your general practitioner or family doctor and let them know. They will be able to give you information too. If you call your regular doctor or your OB and you haven't seen them yet since you have been pregnant, they will want you to go in for an appointment, but don't be worried! It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the baby. Just take care of yourself and remember that you are taking care of your baby all day too.

JamieBeth,

I'd say your best bet is to try and get in to see your GP if you can, or a walk in clinic otherwise. It's not an urgent thing, as your fever isn't dangerously high yet. (though as MrsLiberty mentioned, head to the ER if it heads on upwards of 101) But it will help put your mind at ease, and hopefully the doctor can prescribe you a medicine that has been proven safe for use during pregnancy to help you fight off the cold more effectively.

I'm going through the exact same thing myself right now. I got a chest cold over the weekend and was absolutely terrified to take anything for it, so I just slept and drank orange juice and hoped it would go away. When I eventually gave in 5 days later and went to the doctor she told me it was a bacterial lung infection and slapped with an antibiotic run to clear it from my system. I'm still worried sick about the illness and how it's affecting my baby, but at least now I have enough energy to sit upright and eat solid food.

Your body can do both jobs (take care of you, and make a baby), but you'll probably need to help it along so that you can get better as fast as you can and concentrate on making the healthiest baby you can. Hang in there.

As long as you can keep the fever down don't worry about the baby. I had a nasty cold with Fritz when I was first pregnant and then the flu with a high fever when I was about halfway through. Lots of people get sick and have fevers when pregnant and their babies are just fine.

my dr told me robitussin is safe for pregnancy, but check it out first.

also I think it's normal! I think the baby steals all your nutrients and anti-bodies making you more likely to get sick! try not to worry and take care of yourself!

From what I was told it is more the medication that you have to worry about than the illness itself. From what I understand the illness can't pass to the baby but meds can. Just check with your doctor before you take anything....drink lots of fluids and rest! I hope your feeling better soon.

I had bronchitus a few weeks ago, followed by a really bad cold and a sinus infection. Keep your fever down with tylenol, and if you wonder what you can take talk to a pharmacist and they can let you know whats safe.
