WIC - Women, Infants and Children
helps women get food things and formula to take care of their child
you go to your local health department to sign up
WIC appointments correlate with Well Child Checkups, and if you want you can get those done at the health department at the same time, and take care of shots.
there is an age limit for the children, but i don't know it off the top of my head
I looked into WIC during my last pregnancy but we made too much then and DH got a raise since then so I know for SURE we dont qualify. Would be nice to get the extra help but I would hate to take it from someone who needed it knowing what the guidelines are and how low your income has to be to get it. I think its a great thing for women to get though.
When my son was a baby, we were on WIC....it was great....a huge help....being a single mother at the time, I needed all the help I could get. I know with two incomes, we'll make too much....but I know that there are people out there that need it far more than I do.

Thank you to graciesmommie for the awesome siggy!!!
i wasn't able to get it with my first since technically my parents cared for both of us and my step dad made too much ($10/month too much) but i got it with my second. however we got off of it about a year ago because we could afford what we were getting. but with getting a new house, plus a new one to feed i think we are going to need it again.
Being in the military and a one income family we qualify and currently get it for the kids so we will just stay on it. It really helps with the formula if the baby has issues breastfeeding.

We are fortunate financially. So we don't even look into it. But someone told me that everyone in New Mexico qualifies for it for the first year of the baby's life. I have actually heard it from several ppl. Maybe it is the same in your state? Or is WIC federal? I don't even know, just thought I'd pass that along.

Its a federal program that is determined on state to state level. I hope that makes sense. It is a federal program where each state has their own limits on like what food you can get and for how long and so on so it could very well be that in NM you get it for a year.
I think it is a great program and I think that every child should be able to get it regardless of financial status. It is a nutritional program that is a great one at that.

With my husband being in the military they do not count our housing allowence so we will be able to qualify for WIC (i think) and i will take advantage of it. military income isn't the best so having programs like WIC will be awesome!!!
question: does anybody know how you go about applying for it while you are pregnant? how far along do you have to be what are the requirements etc.
my husband just joined the national guard and leaves for basic in 2wks, then when he gets back in july they told them to be prepared to go to iraq in august... we are taking a MAJOR pay cut and i'm thinkin it will help us out!! other wise we wouldn't qualify for anything!!!
dd has it now and i plan on getting it as soon as i get the letter from my ob on the 5th of march.

I got it with dd#1, but not with dd#2. It really does help with formula costs, but it's such a pain in the butt! It takes you like 1/2 hour to check out b/c they have to run your checks thru, then you have to sign everything, and they have to check your card...they need to come up with a better system. I always got some huffy person behind me in line....
With dd#2 we discovered generic formula, so it was like 1/2 the price.
I think it's a great program for ppl that really need it. Our financial situation is better now, too, so I doubt we'll be getting it....plus I'm going to try to bf longer.
