Can someone please explain bottles to me? What makes some better than others? And I plan on bf'ing but if I pump and the baby takes it in a bottle, that will cause nipple confusion? I would really like to pump to keep a supply on hand so that my husband can take part in feeding her and bonding with her, but not if it's going to cause the baby confusion and make it harder in the long run.

And then I see bottles that have these fancy bag insert things?? Are those better than the ones without? I'm so lost when it comes to bottles and I have no clue where to even begin. I want to buy some sooner than later because if I end up on bedrest from pre-e and have to send my husband to the store, he's not going to have a clue what to get.

Forgive my complete ignorance, I'm new to this parenting thing

honestly it depends on the baby! Jesse was a bottle refuser, and I tried every bottle with him. the ONLY thing I could finally get him to take was Avent. YOu just need to try and see what your baby and you like. As for nipple confusion, its debatable whether or not it exists, I dont think it does personally

Yep---every baby is different. Kylie didnt care where her food was coming from....she never had any problems with nipple confusion at all. I know some babies are even very picky about their pacifiers, Kylie wasnt. We had the playtex ventaire natural shape---the nipple on it was more similar to a breast than a regular bottle nipple. She did fine with those. As for the drop-ins(the fancy bag insert things, LOL), I know a lot of people like them because you can squeeze the bag to get all the air out easier....I find it to just be more waste and not environmentally friendly, so we didnt go that route. But, you may find them to be the best/easiest for you. You will find what works for you and your little girl, so whatever it is, stick with it!

I have NO experience, but I just had this talk with my cousin and her baby is 5 months old! She breastfed and used the bottles that have the inserts because it was easy to store the milk she pumped in the freezer, then defrost it in hot water and pop the insert into a bottle. We also talked about the whole nipple confusion thing, and she said that the lactation consultant told her she should wait to use bottles until the baby was a few weeks old and really had the hang of breastfeeding. Like I said, no experience, just going off advice I've received. I hope this helps!

The best bottle is the one your baby will drink from. It may take a few before you find the right one. We have always used Avent bottles with no problems.

If you are worried about nipple confusion just wait until your milk supply is good and the baby is good at latching and it should be ok. You can also opt to have others feed the baby with a sippy and not use a bottle.

I want to try this bottle this time http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BK8RH...d=1EMGF7NOHNTFG

I agree with the others...totally depends on the baby! Seth preferred Avent bottles and didn't really want to take anything else.

If you're really dead set on breastfeeding, you really won't need any in the beginning. We didn't attempt a bottle with Seth until he was 2-3 weeks old. That was long enough for US to establish a good breastfeeding relationship and he struggled for awhile eating from the bottle, but we just kept on trying and he eventually got it. It took probably 2 months for him to take a full feeding from one. Most LC's or LLL people will tell you to wait at least 6 weeks to introduce a bottle, but just go with what feels right to you. Don't stress about it right now...it'll be fine! If you would feel more comfortable having a few in the house, just buy maybe 1 of a couple of kinds of bottles and then if you use one and that works, go with that!

Although I don't have any insight on which bottle is best, here is some good info on bottles/nipple confusion.

Just wanted to say that with my DD we went out and bought all of the Avent bottles and she hated them... All babies are different. She ended up using the Platex drop in bottles. They were actually awesome because they were really easy to clean and you squeeze all the air out of them so she didnt get fussy and gassy.

As far as nipple confusion my friend breast and bottle fed and she told me to just make sure that the baby has a good latch onto your breast before you introduce the bottle. After that they are good to go either way.

Autumn didn't care whatsoever about what type of bottle she had. Nor did she care about her pacifiers. But I know that some babies are pretty picky. I would suggest getting maybe one of several different types and seeing which one Baby likes best. As far as nipple confusion, I would wait 3 weeks before giving Baby a bottle. That's what we did and Autumn never had any confusion at all, but still took a bottle. You don't want to wait much longer than that because then the baby might not take a bottle. Oh yeah, and make sure for the first bit, you have someone else give her a bottle, not you. She probably won't take a bottle from you because she'll know she can have the real thing.
