So, let us know if you dive in or steer clear of deli meats due to the listeria concern.

Are there any other foods that you typically avoid during pregnancy?

I steer clear. My OB and family Dr said during my first pregnancy to avoid it. It's not just the listeria either. Lunch meat is packed with nitrates and those aren't good for you either.

I avoid hot dogs for the most part but give in once in a while. When I do give in I buy the nitrate free ones and obviously I cook them!

I know there are certain types of fish you should avoid but I don't eat fish anyway so I don't have to worry about that.

A bit of Listeria info:
Quote:
What are the risks of a pregnant woman getting listeriosis?

According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 2,500 persons become seriously ill each year in the United States and among these, 500 will die. According to research, pregnant women account for 27% of these cases. CDC claims that pregnant women are 20 times more likely to become infected than non-pregnant healthy adults.
Quote:
Can listeriosis harm my baby?

If you are pregnant and are infected with listeriosis, you could experience:
  • Miscarriage
  • Premature delivery
  • Infection to the newborn
  • Death to the newborn (about 22% of cases of perinatal listeriosis result in stillbirth or neonatal death)
Early treatment may prevent fetal infection and fetal death.

I eat it. Never hurt all the millions of woman that have eaten it for years and years when pregnant.
Only thing I avoid is the alcohol and meds and stuff like that.

I don't eat lunch meat when I'm not pregnant, and it doesn't interest me now. If I did want it then I would just cook it.

I eat it on occassion. My doctor recommended the pre-packaged lunch meat over the deli meat, but the pre-packaged is full of sodium... so I'll usually have it when I'm out to eat - at Panera or a reputable deli.

I eat it every once in a while. i ate it throughout both of my pregnancies and since deli sandwiches are fast to make in a rush I grab it on the run - maybe once a every week or two.

I steer clear of all caffeine...I know that you are allowed to have a certain amount each day, however, with Xavier I over did it and drank a ton - I blame myself somewhat for his hyperness and whatnot - whether or not it was me and the caffeine I don't know but I'm not taking that chance again.

I'm not a big meat eater anyhow so I don't bother with it anyway. I know it's fine to eat deli meat if it's heated to steaming but it's not worth it lol.

I'm not really a big lunch meat person so I don't eat it that often anyway, but when I do DH always microwaves it & toasts my bread (even before I was pregnant). That's just the way we like to eat it. I've been trying to cut-back on my caffeine, avoiding meds, etc. That's about it. I don't eat fish so that's not an issue. I do eat shrimp/lobster but only on occassion so it's not a big deal.

Just about every day for lunch, but I heat it up

I ate it cold with Holden and he is the picture of health..

I would never eat deli meat from sketchy places though, subway.. little holes in the wall that you don't know if their meat is fresh etc etc

I try to stay away from caffeine though my doctor says 1 caffeinated drink a day is fine. Normally I just have a sip or less to get rid of the awful; withdrawal headaches i'm having.

I hate fish, except tuna.. so I eat LESS tuna and no other fish, no issue there.

I steer clear. I have had one pastrami melt from a restaurant. I am avoiding hot dogs, even though I had one nitrate free one. I threw out the rest of the package after eating the one.

I will eat deli meat if it's heated to steaming since everything I've read/heard says it's safe.

But with other foods I tend to be pretty conservative. For two reasons:

1). I am much better at avoiding all together than trying to eat something sparingly or in moderation (am an all or nothing girl)

2.) I am a huge worrier when I'm pregnant. I accidentally ate some cake batter last pregnancy without thinking and it had raw eggs in it and I worried for WEEKS. I know if something happened, even if it was totally unrelated I would probably blame myself so I do much better mentally when I avoid it all together.

I guess I should have added I don't eat seafood at all. Not because of pregnancy just because it's GROSS!
