Prune juice? LOL There's some prenatals out there called CitraNatal (by RX only)..they have added stool stofteners in them. I know you say you fear them but I think it's a small amount..but maybe enough to help you. I would stay away from bananas and starchy foods for a while. Try eating more foods with fiber and drink more fluids. Sometimes not having enough fluids in your digestive tract can cause constipation.
Eat things with a lot of fiber, drink juice (prune is best but others get things moving as well). I know this will sound weird but eat some ice chips and then drink a hot cup of tea or something else hot. Alternating between hot and cold beverages is a natural method of relieving constipation.
If all else fails though you may have to use the stool softeners.
Activia Yogurt works but you have to faithfully eat one a day to stay regular.
Iron pills... i feel for you, they gave them to me with my son I took it once and threw them out, I had such bad gas after one pill I thought I was having a miscarriage, I was having doubling over pain

Why do you feel a stool softner? It won't make you run to the toilet and go, it just makes it easier to go. I have to take them after my c/sections.
But I also take iron pills. My Dr said to take the Slow FE iron pills. It releases the iron slowly through out the day instead of in one lump and it helps with the constipation and also helps to not give you an upset tummy if the iron does that to you, which it did me. So try those, they do help and they are just OTC.
