Meant optimistic in thread title, sorry!

So I had my 2nd beta done.

On 3/11 it was 5221 at 2:00pm
and today 3/13 it is 6484 at 9:00am

nowhere near double and they don't sound optimistic and are going to do another beta and another ultrasound on monday. They said it should be near 10,000. After reading an article on WebMD I read that when your beta levels reach 1,000-5,000 it can take 72-96 hours to double.

Here is an excerpt from the article I read (http://blogs.webmd.com/healthy-pregn...-early_30.html) -

A single HCG value doesn't give enough information about the health or viability of the pregnancy. Within the first 2-4 weeks after fertilization, HCG usually doubles every 48-72 hours. That usually corresponds to HCG levels below 1200 IU. From 1200-6000, the HCG usually takes 72-96 hours to double. Above 6000 IU, the hCG often takes over four days to double. So, the rate of increase in HCG levels normally varies as a pregnancy progresses. Normal HCG values vary up to 20 times between different pregnancies, however, and an HCG that does not double every two to three days does not necessarily indicate a problem with the pregnancy. Some normal pregnancies will have quite low levels of HCG, and result in perfect babies.

Has anyone ever had HCG levels that don't go up as quickly and had a successful pregnancy? I am quite upset that my Dr's office is being so negative and seeming like this pregnancy will not be successful. They told me that they are sorry, which to me is quite negative.

They are doing another u/s on Monday to see if it is ectopic... But, my second question is since I had an ultrasound on Wednesday wouldnt they be able to tell from that if it is ectopic?

I wish I was smarter about all this stuff so I could help you out more. I'm honestly not sure but I didn't want to not reply either.

I have heard that #'s stop doubling once you are past early pregnancy so I'm not sure what about the #'s has your doctor feeling so negative about it. Doctors have definitely been wrong though.

Sending you lots of **healthy pregnancy** vibes and I hope that Monday comes quickly for you so that you can get some answers. ((hugs))

your betas basically increased 24% in 48hrs. Most dr.'s are looking for 60% or more in the 48hr. window. Sometines, they will do a 1wk test giving them more to look at. So from your last test, they will wait 1wk., then retest. This may show a better outcome. I would request this from them. Your right about the betas taking longer to double than 48hrs once you reach a certain point. In your testing, it took 6.4 days to double. There is a great website on misdiagnosed m/c, due to low betas, google it. I pray for a miracle for you. And yes there are stories out there with happy endings that were in your same situation. I will pray for you tonight, I know it will be long weekend, I had the same weekend last weekend. Try to stay positive, as hard as it may be, and I wish you the best of luck.

Yes, they should have been able to tell if it was an etopic pregnancy, just by your u/s.
I'm not sure about Betas, I've never known mine. Try not to stress about it!! T&P!

i'm guessing that if they saw an embryo in your uterus on wed, they would have ruled out an ectopic, unless they are thinking that there is another fertilized egg in the tube.

i think you're doing the right thing by being optimistic. my t&ps are with you.

I haven't had betas checked so I don't have any info to offer there. Hopefully you'll get good news after the U/S.

I would think they would have been able to rule out etopic on Wednesday and I believe with Owen my betas didn't go up normally, but he is here and driving me nuts.

Healthy pregnancy vibes to you!

i am not knowledgable about betas except that they are so varied that they consider them to be an unreliable source to determine pregnancy age cause the numbers can vary so much. But I DO know (well im no doc but in my paranoid readings) that its almost guaranteed not ectopic, you would be in so much pain at 7 weeks, so i am hoping for the best for you

When they did your u/s on Wednesday they SHOULD have looked at all your female parts including your tubes to rule out any eptopic pregnancy. Once the baby is implanted in your uterus it can't move to your tubes.

I really don't know much about your beta numbers since mine have never been taken but as long as their is a rise I would still be optimistic.

I will be thinking of you. If you don't like what they say at your next appointment don't just go along with it, get a second opinion. Good luck!

I wish I had better news. The reason they are being like that is because your betas did not go up like they should have. They do not want to get you excited only to have it not go right. There is a method to their maddness. Even if we don't like it. The fact that you numbers are going up so slow would indicate a possible ectopic pregnancy to them. They should have seen it in your previous ultrasound but they could have missed it because of how early you would still technically be. I hope that they are wrong and everything is ok. i will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
