I came home from work and tried for an HOUR to get that baby heartbeat...and NOTHING! Just my own... It was so frustrating because the nurse at the doctors office found it with a doppler in under 5 minutes! Well number one, it scares me a little and number two, it left me asking how can she find it and not me?!I finally gave up and said I would try tomorrow... Its a 3 M_Hz doppler which is the higher one...ugh how disappointing...

i had a doppler for my 3rd baby.. usually the heart beat you wont be able to pick up till around 12-15 weeks..

those ones are so much more sensitive when it comes to the heartbeat..

dont worry..

next ttime you go to your docs.. bring that with you.. ask them to help show you.. that might work also too.

The ones you use at home are WAY less sensititive than the one your Dr uses. They don't normally pick it up until around 12-14 weeks.

I have been able to find mine at 8w3d. I heard a couple of tips once and I am not sure they are what worked but it is what I do when I can't find it. I *still* have to search for a little bit to find it even now and there have been times when I have searched for an hour, put it away, and tried later and found it.

Anyhow, try it with a full bladder. You may want to put a pillow under your butt to help lift things. Or, you can sit on the edge of the bed, lay back, and just let your legs hang over the side.

Use lots of the lotion. You might want to start looking low, by your pelvic bone with the doppler angled at about 45 degrees (towards your pelvic bone) Move it very slowly and try switching the direction of the angle you are pointing it.

This baby has been very hard to find because, unlike my othersw, s/he is never in the same spot. I am 12 weeks now and a few weeks ago I found the heart beat up next to the right side of my belly button!! I was shocked! Starting at about 10.5 weeks, I started feeling a flutter on my lower left side when pushing around with the doppler looking for baby. I moved the doppler to the exact spot where I felt the flutters and there was the h/b. Crazy for it to be able to move from so high to so low (right above my pubic bone). The last time I listened, it was on my right side again but still down low.

I will be checking for it again today since I just hit 12 weeks and I want to keep track of the h/r with each week to compare to my others. I know I will have to search around again and it might take a while. It does get a little discouraging but I just have to be patient and try not to get worried.

I am sure you will find it.

This is why I will not be getting one this time. I would get so freaked out when I couldn't find it right away and a feeling of dread would come over me.

Try to not stress sweetie. Its still pretty early.

(((((HUGS)))))

Where were you looking for it at?? were you on/around your pubic bone?

What does the placenta sound like?

I'm able to get glimpses of the heartbeat but s/he has been moving so much that I never get a firm number....it's goes up and up and then jumps back down...

Don't worry I thought I found mine but I didn't. For the first time yesterday the dr found mine in no time flat. I'm not good with dopplers anyways.

I looked right about my pubic bone from hip to hip and everywhere...all I could hear was mine. I am fluffy so that might be why I cant find it...it is just so frustrating...anyway..I am going to wait a few days till my new ultrasound gel comes in the mail, maybe then I can try again..Thanks for all of the tips!

I haven't been able to find mine yet either. I am a little fluffy and I have a tipped uterus so that's making it more difficult. Plus the babies are so small yet they can move faster than we can chase them with the doppler. lol

Just a lurker but wanted to mention that KY and hand lotion works just as well as ultrasound gel.
I couldn't hear my guy until 15 weeks. The placenta sounds like a woosh woosh and the baby sounds like a galloping horse...completely different sounds. For a long time I heard only placenta...and even now at almost 36 weeks sometimes I will hear umbilical cord instead of heart beat. Try not to stress!

my ob didn't even try with my last pregnancy until after my 1st trimester. it's very difficult to find this early on.

Once you get a little farther along, you'll find it more easily and it's usually in the same spot (or it was for Holden anyways)

I hope you have better luck next time, try not to worry I'm sure everything is fine with the baby Sometimes it can be hard to pick up on your own at home, I'm pretty sure they're less sensitive then the one's at the doctors office.
