We're going to Nags Head at the end of August. Went last year as well, SOOOO much fun, very kid friendly, tons to do and the beaches are just amazing!! The sound side, is shallow and you can walk out a good mile and it's shallow and the kids have an awesome time playing in it.

I would definitely say Ocean City. The boardwalk is excellent. They have a carnival for the kids. The beach is nice. I would just check for hotels now because they can get a little expensive in the summer. Also, don't plan to go in mid June. That's when all the high schoolers go after graduation.

I would second the Nags Head area - which is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There is tons to do for kids of all ages, including the beach. Miniture golf, movies, water parks, etc. And the best part, you don't have to eat out every meal b/c you rent a beach cottage with a kitchen. It's a little less commercialized than Mrytle Beach or Ocean City.
