Someone close to me told me today that she heard pg ladies shouldn't drink Green Tea. Has anyone else heard this and if so, why? I love Green Tea! Now, I've stopped drinking soda and coffee...I don't want to give up my Green Tea too!!!

I read that pregnant women shouldn't drink green tea a few months ago. I don't really drink it but I talked to my Midwife about it and she didn't think there was a problem in drinking it. I would ask your MD/Midwife just to be certain.

Green tea is fine, but stay away from the kind that include additions like ginseng.

My doctor told me to not drink green tea, and if I wanted to have some tea she said to have fruity tea. I have no idea why but I have been missing my Starbucks green tea ice tea!

Green tea interferes with the absorbtion of folic acid.

"Women are advised to take supplements of folic acid when trying to conceive and during the first trimester (the first 3 months) of pregnancy because it is during this time period that the baby's neural tube is developing. Folic acid helps ensure normal development and protects against spina bifida by enabling the production of the enzyme DHFR.

While a cup or two of green tea is unlikely to pose a problem, drinking large amounts of green tea could decrease the activity of DHFR, increasing risk of neural tube defects. "

Yes I read that any tea can interfere w/ the asorption of certain nutrients in your vitamins.. I think it was the folic acid. It was in my book "Your Pregnancy Week by Week".
