so i had my 37 1/2 week appointment this morning, and for the first time, my doctor did a cervical check. i am 1cm dilated and 50% effaced. cool. then she said "i'm going to try and rupture your membranes a little bit... this will hurt" and did that. it did hurt. i wasn't sure what "rupture membranes" meant. later, i was thinking 'why didn't you ask me if i want you to do that first?". i guess it didn't work, because it was this morning and i haven't been leaking water. but it did make me bleed. she also mentioned that if i want the pregnancy to be over with, she can induce me before my due date. my due date is may 8th, she would have time for an induction on may 1 or may 7. she would induce me with pitocin. i don't want that, i might think about it after my due date, but why before if it is not medically necessary? so yeah.. i had some cramping after the exam and her trying to break my bag of water, but half an hour later i was fine and didn't feel much for the rest of the day.

i didn't really understand that she was attempting to break my bag of water when she did. english isn't my first language and i just didn't get it right away. when my husband and i left the office i asked him "what did she say she was doing? did she try to break my bag of water or did i misunderstand?" it happened so quickly and i was too perplex to say anything. oh well......

Hmm I thought stripping your membranes is basically clearing out your plug? I did not even realize it was breaking your water. Good to know!

wow, I would think she would strip you first! I would avoid an induction unless you are past your due date. Hope whatever she did works and sends you into labor soon!

stripping membranes means clearing out the plug? what does that mean, she was trying to get the plug out? i'm so confused lol. that's probably what she tried to do then. i don't know. nobody ever said anything about breaking my bag of water, i just assumed that's what it meant. i really don't know what i'm talking about though.......

stripping membranes is totally different from breaking your water. Stripping is when they basically loosen the sac of water from where it is attached to your cervix, they dont actually puncture the bag because doing that could allow bacteria to enter where the baby is. I would assume by rupture membranes she meant strip....since its usually against policy to break a person's water if they arent in active labor. So your bleeding is normal and you should not expect any water leaking, but it is strange that she didnt ask you first! I had my membranes stripped at 40 weeks, but they didnt break my water until i was in active labor and stuck at 7 cm. HTH to explain the difference a little!

Yes, I'm sure she meant strip your membranes, NOT rupture them. If she ruptured your water, you'd have to immediately go to the hospital.

I can't believe they offered to induce you before your due date. not many doctors would do that unless there is a health risk. Most doctors will make you wait until at least 41 weeks before considering induction.
Weird!
