Well just got a call from the doc and I guess I failed my glucose test with flying colors. He wants me in ASAP to do the 3 hour one. Now I'm really worried because I know if I it then I am at risk for a larger baby. They are already planning on me having a 10+ lbs baby so what would I be in for then??

Wish me luck. I go on Thursday at 8:30.

Did you eat before your 1hr test? If you fail the 3hr, you can control it with diet or insulin and that will prevent the large baby. My first was 9lb 12oz and I had horrible control over my sugar, mostly because I didn't know for so long I had it.
My 2nd was MUCH more controlled and she was 8lb 4oz.
It sucks, I won't lie but it's managable and I could think of worse things to have.
Good luck with your test, TAKE A SNACK FOR AFTER!!

No I didn't eat anything except for the night before at 7:00 and had the test done at 9 the next morning.

When do they decide if you need to take insulin or if you can try and control it with your diet??

They'll set you up with a nutritionist to give a diet plan to follow and see if it works. You'll check your blood sugars a few times a day and see if the diet is controlling it.

Oh that stinks. I hope you pass the 3 hour one though. Having GD doesn't necessarily mean that you'll have a big baby though it does increase the chances. Why do they already think your baby will be 10+ pounds?

I think you're supposed to eat normally before the one hour test. It's the three hour that you have to fast for.

I went with my friend for her three hour today. Other than it being really boring and the fact that she was all sorts of twitchy from not eating it wasn't too bad. We went and gorged ourselves after. I recommend bringing something to read or a friend to keep you entertained.

You are not alone. I got the call today that I had to come in and do the 3 hour glucose test. I didn't have anything to eat after 8pm the night before and only a little water before and still failed the 1 hour. I go back Thursday at 9am. Fingers crossed for the both of us!

My doctor told me not to eat after midnight for the 1 hour and that all I could have was water.

It wouldn't matter if you eat or not. As long as you don't eat for an hour BEFORE you start the drink, then you'd be fine if you didn't have GD.

Good luck with your test.

And just because you have gestational diabetes, doesn't mean your just doomed to have a large baby.. I had GD with Adriana and I didn't get my fasting blood sugars under control until I was 34 weeks pregnant.. She was born at 39 weeks and 2 days (basically full term) a whooping 6 lbs 15 oz's.. Far from a big baby.. And to this day she's a petite little girl.. So there is hope.. I also know of a good fish oil to take that's been helping me keep my blood sugars in control.. The down side to the fish oil, is it's about $40 for a 2 month supply, but it's worth every penny.. Plus, it's suppose to help your baby be smarter then those babies that didn't get DHA and EPA. If your interested in the fish oil, send me a PM..
