xpost!

So I just went out to check the mail at one in the morning only to find a letter from the (horrible!) rheumatologist I went to a couple of months ago. I was confused as to why they would be sending me anything, since I called to cancel my second appointment with him early last week. The appointment was scheduled for the 19th of this month, but I disliked this guy SO MUCH that I went to another doctor a few days ago to get a second opinion. Anyway...

At the appointment I had with the yucky Doctor, I'll just call him Dr. G, I waited in the waiting room with my mother and daughter for almost two hours, then waited in the room for him countless times as he went in and out to talk to nurses, take phone calls, etc. He didn't listen to me, barely looked at me, basically threw a paper gown at me and told me to "take off my clothes", did some sort of two minute exam, and brushed me off while giving me SLEEPING PILLS! Uh, hello? I have a seven month old and I can't be knocked out on some heavy meds! Ugh!

So I went to the check-out so I could get out of there. The receptionist tells me that Dr. G wants to see me back in a couple months. I told her to forget it because I won't have insurance then anyway, and I had no plans to return to this doctor. She completely ignored me and said that I would receive a letter with my next appointment date at least two weeks prior to the appointment... Uh, okay. I just wanted to get out of there, so I figured I would call and cancel said appointment. The woman, not looking at me this whole time (bunch of RUDE witches in this place!!!) then asks for my copay. I told her I had already PAID this copay before I even went into the appt. She says snarkily, "Well, our records do not indicate that you have paid anything, so I will need that $25". Um, no. I am not PAYING TWICE for a crap doctor! NOT happening! I told her that I had paid cash to the front receptionist, and I was sure she would remember me, because I had been holding Alice at the time, and the receptionist had asked me questions about her. This woman REFUSED to ask the other receptionist. She said, "Well, you can see I am busy here.". So she said to just "move along", and that she would place a note on my file to make sure to find the receipt of payment. I doubted she would actually do this, so I did ask the front receptionist, who said she would take care of it. No problem, I thought. At this point, we had been there for several hours, and poor Alice had to tag along, and she was exhausted. So we left.

Fast forward to tonight. I get this letter that claims that I have an "unpaid balance" on my account.... of SEVENTY DOLLARS. WTH?! I guess they tacked on an extra $45 for late fees?! And, even though this is the first notice I have seen of this, it has already been turned over to a debt collection agency! And these idiots haven't even figured out that I have already canceled my appointment with that hack, because it says that if I don't pay in full before my next appointment, they will cancel it.

What do I do? What would you do?

If you read this whole drawn out thing, I adore you!

Oh I would fight that! $45 is alot of money just to throw away. I would go to the office and not leave until it is resolved. Hopefully you remember what the nicer receptionist looked like? Give them hell!

Ditto on going right to the office and insist on speaking with the office manager. I probably wouldn't lawyer up only because its going to cost you more than just the extra $45. Hopefully by talking to the manager you can get things resolved. I would also make it a point to spread the word about their shady practice!

oh heck no i would not pay that , i would go speak to the head person and if it turns out that they are just as rude as all the other people then i would report that place , if you did make a scene about it im sure other people would probably agree with you and say that they have had the same problem !!!

I wouldn't pay. I actually had a similar situation and I found their email address and send the doctor and the office manager an email stating how incredibly offended I was at the behviour of the entire office and how I would never return for such terrible care. (it was a fertility specialist who told me it was "impossible" for me to have children on my own and said I needed to be on birth control to "fix" me...among other things).

The doctor himself actually called me to apologize and spent several minutes answering all my questions about my bloodworkd. SANS attitude. He was the one who diagnosed me with PCOS actually....but I never did go back.

Anyways...don't pay and make sure they are aware of how terrible they are treating their patients.

That's horrible. I hope it gets figured out quickly. Shouldn't you get a receipt from them for paying?

I thought I should have gotten a receipt too, but no such luck. I guess when you pay cash they don't figure you need the receipt? I have called several times today but haven't gotten through. I am just so frustrated and mad! I mean, who here has an extra seventy bucks just laying around for crap like this, especially this close to Christmas?! And to not even get a warning letter or anything?? I thought it was taken care of, so I wasn't even worried about this. I got no warning, call, nothing. Just a letter telling me it had been sent to COLLECTIONS!

Thanks for your replies, ladies. I am going to try calling again at 1pm. Grrrr!

Nope. They wouldnt get a penny from me. I would write a nasty letter to them and dispute it. I used to have to pay 20% with the old insurance I had a few years before the twins were born and I went to a family practice doctor for an issue with my hand and they were supposed to send me a referal in the mail. Not only did I never get the refferal, I got a bill for my 20% of the visit. They were asking for $212.00 as my share for a 15 minute visit. I tried to call their office only to find out that they went out of business. I wrote to them (by email and standard mail) and told them I fully intended to notify my insurance company and the medical board of thier practices and refused to pay them anything. I never heard from them again.

A few things you need to do
1. Write the office and explain everything you said to us to them, and get a breakdown of the charges they are claiming you owe.
2. Call your insurance company for a copy of the explanation of benefits so you have proof of what they paid and what they say you're responsible for
3. If a collection agency sends you a letter, write one back immediately disputing it so it hopefully won't hurt your credit while you're getting things figured out
4. Tell everyone what an awful office they are!

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this! If they refuse to fix things, you need to make your insurance company aware that they're double charging you. For future reference, the one time a receipt is necessary is with a cash payment. And I can guarantee the receptionist knows that. I'm not aloud to say on here what I want to call her. Lol.

the only time i dont worry about a receipt is when i pay by check..i can use my cancelled for that one.on all others i either get a paper one if in person or a confirmation number if im paying by phone.i have fought too many people over repaying over and over because i didnt use to get them,i used to be "trusting" when it came to dealing with so-called professional offices.YEA RITE!!! theyll rip you a new one quicker than anybody.if i were you i would try to calmly go in a speak to the lady that took your money, take alice with you chances are shell remember her better, tell her whats goin on and that you would like a receipt.if she cant do this have another one from in office come over to witness this and offer them the original 25 co-pay(it will be lots cheaper this way and wont ruin your credit) if they say no then you say ok i offered to pay TWICE but i will not offer again ,take me to court! if they do take you you will have to pay court costs plus the bill but chances are they wont if you stand up to them.good luck!! oh and definatly do whatever it takes to let it be known how his office is run
