As you may remember, Chase has been having some breathing issues on and off since about 5 months old. He wheezes occasionally and sometimes has these coughing fits. Well, last night, I woke up to him coughing so much...seriously for like a minute straight (which is a long time when you really experience it!!)...he couldn't breathe...his face got all red....he was gasping for breath afterwards and only getting a little bit of air I could tell His chest was heaving up and down. I picked him up immediately of course but I felt so helpless....I tilted his head back like his doctor told me, but it didn't seem to help much. After he could breathe better he immediately started crying for about 5 minutes. I gave him his inhaler and rocked him back to sleep. He has been fine ever since.

I have noticed that because he is more mobile now and more active, he seems to cough a bit more, especially after a particularly long army-crawling session...

So I called his pedi today to see what I should do and she said we should come in. His appointment is at 2:30....I hope we get this figured out!

Thanks...we don't know yet. She said he has to have 3 confirmed wheezing events before he is 3 in order to officially be diagnosed with asthma. Confirmed means that they observe it in their office or in urgent care or something. So far he has 1 event. But she said just because he is not diagnosed yet doesn't mean they won't treat it similarly.

Poor guy that breaks my heart. I grew up with my brother having severe asthma and i remember all the emergency runs to the ER because of it. It was soo scary for me to see as well as my mom (no dad around). I remember my moms car broke down on the side of the freeway on the way to the hospital during one of his attacks and we had to hitch a ride with someone to get him to the ER...granted that was 34+ years ago when that was safe for the most part safe.

Asthma is so scary, i hope that they can get it under control since that is what it sounds like. If they do diagnosis him you may want to consider a asthma support class which will help you deal with the different symptoms and techniques. Its soo hard when the asthmatic is so young they can't tell you what is going on & how they are feeling most of the time. HUGs to both of you

OH my gosh! I am so sorry! I can't imagine how panicked you must have been!

I hope he's doing better and the doctor can give you some answers!

I know in our area they tend to shy away from a firm asthma diagnosis for children far longer than seems necessary. My niece used a nebulizer for nearly three years before the Dr would actually agree she had asthma. Do you have asthma? If not, I might check into some sort of support group like a prior poster mentioned. There are a ton of little tricks to help (some very simple but effective) that doctors tend not tell you (at least in my experience). Good luck! I hope they are able to give Chase some relief.

oh wow, that's scary! please kup.

our pedi. says any wheezing after age 1 is asthma, so by that def. my dd is asthmatic...but hers is very mild. no inhaler for her but she's on singulair daily & albuterol (liquid) as needed.
