I think the recommendation now is 6 months old. The doctors keep changing their minds on that one. I usually wait until they show signs of wanting to eat, or need something more. Some of my kids were eating at 4 months, and others not till 7 months.
Each child is different, so go by your own feelings and signs that HE is ready. I gave Abby a few bites of pears tonight.
Kayla and Emily were both ready right around this time too. They watch you eat, they sit pretty well, they bm or formula is increasing quite a bit at feedings, etc...
I've always heard 6 months and our pediatrician says 6 months. Cohen had cereal at 5 months. Abram stares and opens his mouth at me whenever i'm eating, but I don't want to try and give him any food yet...I think it's too soon for him still.
I asked my Pedi about this at Miles' last check up since he wants to eat like every hour at night. And he said that around 4-6months if he is showing signs of wanting to eat and not being full from just Breast Milk. DH really wants to feed him some real food...it's too funny I catch him letting Miles lick stuff off his fingers.
