Thank gosh I'm on vacation because I need a break from the last 2 days!

Sunday we drove to Connecticut. Henry did well in the car ride. But his cough and congestion worsened and he was miserable all night. He was up from 11-2am and would not settle down. We brought our humidifier because we suspected just as much. Yesterday, we drove thru all this nasty rain and wind that the entire northeast is having. We bought baby Vicks rub for his chest and some saline nose spray. I'm amazed how well the spray works! His nose became runny immediately. I try to suck his nose out and continue to wipe it but he SCREAMS every time I do. Anyone else's baby this upset about the nose area?

We checked into the hotel, went to dinner, and when we came back the hotel had lost power! A transformer blew and the entire town was out. The only lights were in the hallways, front lobby, and for some reason the pool area. Since the jets in the hot tub were off and it was cooled to a warm bath water temp, we just sat with Henry in there to help loosen his chest. Back in our room, we had to wash bottles to a flashlight the hotel had given us. We all went to bed early. He woke up several times because we believe he couldn't breathe well.

This morning we woke up to power, not sure when it came back on. There is lots of room for him to crawl, but then he wheezes so badly from all the exertion. Is there ANYTHING else I can do for this kid? He hasn't had a fever though he is warm (we have motrin just in case). And he's eating just fine. Right now he's trying to nap in his rocker chair bouncy seat (elevated) but he can't because he coughs so badly.

This may be no big deal and just a cold, but it's scary to me.

***UPDATE*** So we took Henry to the ER last night, lucky us they had an entire pediatric wing. His ears and nose looked good but they said his chest didn't sound well. They did a chest xray. Holy crap that was horrible! Ed and I had to pin him down. After the xray, they said his lungs looked pretty good. And said he must just have a virus. He had a breathing treatment (which he loved!) and sent us home 5 hrs later. They also gave us a baby inhaler (with that tube attached) and a prescription for a steroid. He was so exhausted (actually all three of us were) and fought us almost the entire time. Finally got to sleep close to midnight.

What is also a bummer is we can't go visit my grandmother yet. She leaves like 20 minutes away. Hopefully he'll start feeling alot better by the weekend. Gonna take him out today to the grocery store just to get some fresh air.

Poor lil' guy.

How long has he been sick now? What sort of cough is it? If you put your ear to his back or chest can you wheezing or crackling? Is the cough dry or wet sounding? If it's affecting his breathing get him in to be seen by a Dr. They may Rx inhalers to help him. Mak is prone bronchialitis (sp?) when she gets the occasional bad cold and needs to go on Flovent and Ventalin.

sounds exactly like tristan ! he's had a wet cough and been stuffy for awhile thankfully his nose started just dripping on its own but he still has a nasty cough , i brought him to the doctors because its been way too long that hes had this cough and i can always here crackling sometimes i dont even have to put my ear to his back its so loud he can sit beside me and i hear it and they wouldnt give me anything for it she said that it may take another month for this cough to go away but next time he has a cold and then ends up with a cough that lasts that long to bring him back in and THEN they will prescribe a puffer

i hope henry gets better soon !!!

I took Emma to the doctor a few days ago because she had a cold, and then she started wheezing. They said it was bronchitis and gave her an antibiotic. I don't know what happens if it goes untreated, but maybe you'll want to get him to the doctor or emergency room or whatever you have available. My friend just took her daughter to the doctor, and she went from bronchitis to pneumonia! Poor baby, I really hope he gets better soon!

He started coughing on Saturday, it's a very wet cough. All I have to do is hold him and I hear wheezing. I *think* his breathing is ok. If it wasn't, would he be able to suck on a pacifier and breathe thru his nose? He seems to do that ok. He's very glassy eyed and tired. But I wonder if that's from not sleeping as well at night?

I'm sure I can find a nearby hospital ER but I don't want to over react. UGH I wish I wasn't the one who has to make these decisions.

His stuggling to breath will be from the lungs and not because of a stuffy nose if it's a lung infection. If he's exhurting a lot of energy to just breath (his chest is heaving, it's a lot of energy to breath, etc) then get him in ASAP.

Mak can go from a wet cough to a bad lung infection in a matter of days. Trust your gut though. If he's struggling to breath you'll know.

I can so sympathize with you on this! We just were at the hospital with Violet having bronchitis, and she is sick now yet again. When she had bronchitis she was wheezy and working hard to breathe. What you have to look out for is "retracting" where you can see his chest suck in and out with a breath. If you hear any wheezing, you probably want to take him in to check his pulse ox to make sure he's getting enough oxygen into his lungs. Violets was 92% when we arrived and after a breathing treatment she was up to 99% (they won't let you leave until it is above 95%). She didn't get antibiotics because it was considered viral. Oh, and saline nose rinses are the BEST- really helps with congestion. I have the Neil Med Pediatric Kit Sinus Rinse.
I hope he feels better soon!

I hope this passes quick. At least you were able to get something to help his breathing. How funny that he loved the breathing treatment!

He kept sicking his tongue out and trying to "chew" the vapors.

So glad to hear you got him in. Sorry to hear it's a viral chest infection though. Aren't the chest xrays brutal! For Mak's 1st one I wasn't able to be with her because I was 3 months pg with Maddie and for her 2nd one I had both girls with me and had to hold Mak in place. I was crying too.

You'll probably notice a marked improvement in a day or so. Hope he gets better quickly.
