I feel like such a negligent mom b'c I haven't given Joshie anything yet to self-feed. I think the main issue is that we haven't taken his high chair out of the closet...yeah, lame, right? I'm pretty sure I waited till a year with Abby, but my wonderful MIL gave him mum mums last week. (And of course he got consipated, stupid woman.)
Anyway, I was thinking of starting w/ puffs (although my 4yo still insists on eating them so that is going to be fun). I'm not really sure what I would do next, though. Should I go w/ frozen veg. or something else? He has had small amounts of bread and rice, not given to him by me, but by guess who, MIL. So I had to tell her we're not doing solids and she listened for a couple of months but then of course last week Wed. or Mon. there was rice crackers on the list of what he'd eaten at her house.
Don't you love MIL's for that sort of thing? Mine gave Jacob chocolate at 5 months. I was thrilled..
I started with puffs. If you check the isle at the grocery store gerber makes a graduates jarred food for diced apples and diced carrots. DS likes those a lot and they're very soft. You can give cooked pears (diced). The frozen veggies are nice, but you may want to wait until he's gotten used to the finger foods to do something that doesn't dissolve (jacob still has some issues with the skins on peas and stuff sometimes). Yogurt melts are great. I like Earth's best finger foods too. They have some smileys but they don't really melt like puffs. They have a cereal bar that's a little lower in sugar than most you'll find, I cut those up into bite size pieces and give them to Jacob (messy!). Small cubes of cheese are good or shredded cheese. Cottage cheese is good if you know you don't have lactose issues.
Can't think of anything else right now!

Don't feel bad Em just eats puffs and just started eating the gerber crunchies. I haven't given her anything else. Daycare is pushing us to start though so i am glad that you started this thread.
If you want to start finger foods, go for it! Violet started out will with mum mums, soft cooked green beans, peas, carrots, bread, rice, then moved on to fruits, cheeses and other vegetables. Green beans and peas are a great thing to try. Good luck!
We started with puffs and then cheerios for about a month or two. Just yesterday we started frozen peas boiled so they soften up and boiled frozen diced carrots.
Maybe some sweet potato or white potato--mashed, but still chunky. I steamed carrots, peas, etc. and baked sweet potato (cut in strips) and then cut them and then froze them so they were easy to reheat for mealtime.
We started out with puffs, cheerios, Gerber graduate cheese puffs & wagon wheels. Now he can eat pretty much anything. He won't take baby food anymore (this started just last week). I would start out with things that can sort of melt in his mouth & go from there. He'll let you know what he's ready for

You could start with strips of toast, small pieces of banana and cheerios if you want to stay away from puff-like things!
Peas are also great when cooked until soft, they are the perfect size for just starting out with finger food!
I loved baked potatoes cut into bite size pieces, any steamed veggie (peas, carrots), cottage cheese, my grocery store has a mix of steamed lentils and rice, and clara LOVES that, or any other type of bean (I usually cut them in half), ground meat..
We started with puffs and mum-mums, and now she eats anything and everything cut up into bite sized pieces.
Ditto. Add to that the Gerber Biter Biscuits (though they are soooo messy!). Mum Mums are great & are still her favorite. They dissolve easily & don't make as much of a mess but if it constipated him, probably not the best idea. Could you try some sliced banana? That's soft & he could gum it.

We started with mum mums, then little crunchies, puffs, wagon wheels, cheerios, veggies like peas and green beans, bread, french fries, he really can eat almost anything that is soft or dissolves easily.
We also started with puffs and then Cheerios. His absolute fav is cubed cheese. He also does well with tiny pieces of steamed carrots, green beans, chicken, etc. We still do homemade pureed baby food at each meal, although I make it chunkier. And I alternate finger foods between spoonfuls to get him to eat! Yogurt melts are also a fav.
