Claire pretty much just eats yogurt as far as solids go. She will swallow fruit if you insist but she would much rather you just mix it in soy or plain yogurt. She will eat apples, peaches, pears, sweet potatoes, and squash - in yogurt. But not on their own. And I recently discovered that she will eat peas and carrots IF you mix them in mashed potatoes first. So I thought maybe I should rethink my anti-rice cereal stance if it would get her to eat more veggies. So I went to the babyfood aisle of my grocery store and looked at the back of the rice cereal box. The long list of additives and supplements and oils and things I couldn't pronounce made me cringe. The organic variety was no better. It just had organic before the names of oils. So I put it back and resolved to keep trying plain veggie purees. But then while buying oatmeal I came across a product called "cream of rice." Just like cream of wheat - only with rice. The box said great for infants. It's cheaper than rice cereal by half. And the ingredients: rice, water, iron and Vitamin B. That's it. No Oils. No crap I can't pronounce. Just FOOD.

But I had never heard of this product before and am wondering if it's going to taste like crap in a spoon when I get around to making it for her or something.....? Why aren't more moms using this if it's basically the same as rice cereal only cheaper and with WAY fewer additives?

I don't have any personal experience with cream of rice, but wanted to say if you were hesitant to try it I would highly recommend the Happy Baby - Happy Bellies baby food. They have oatmeal, rice and multi-grain. It's organic and I've found it at Target Nowadays I'll sometimes mix some with Allie's veggies and she loves it, especially asparagus and cereal

ETA: As far as the cream of rice, I think baby cereal tends to be broken down more so that it doesn't upset a baby that is new to solids tummy. It's also fortified with vitamins and whatnot. Other than that, I don't know of what other differences there may be

ETA AGAIN : You know what. After thinking about it for more than half a second, I would probably just buy what you found. It seems like it's natural and doesn't contain anything scary like you saw in that other package.

I have eaten it before. We always put sugar and butter in ours b/c it tastes like nothing otherwise, lol. That is a good idea though for a baby, I think I might get some for Livy!

*Danielle, I know you have mentioned before about Claire's dry skin. Have you noticed at all that her skin seems drier/more rough patches with her eating the soy yogurt? Livy's ezcema is starting to show up again and several places all at once. She was eating the soy yogurt (about 1/2 cont. per day) and I thought maybe that was it?

No actually her skin has been a lot better lately. I have been using Cetaphil after her bath and California Baby lotion whenever I notice her skin feeling dry. It seems to be working. That's sk weird about Livys eczema. Usually itswirst in winter and mostly tone by now.

I know, I was surprised to see it back too. I'm going to order some California baby extra mild shampoo/baby wash and keep on using the CJ's BUTTer. The spots from yesterday went away almost right away when I mixed the BUTTer with hydrocortizone cream, but on the back of the tube it says not to use on babies under 2 unless asking doc (which our doc did say to use on the spot on her head but that has been gone for awhile). Do you see any harm in using the cream mixed with the BUTTer 1x day? I have also stopped doing the soy yogurt for about three days, but don't know if that has anything to do with the spots getting better.

I wouldn't use it as a preventive measure. But diluted and mixed to treat a spot - as long as it's not on a really sensitive area is probably ok.

I've only tried Cream of Wheat (for myself), and I like it. I didn't know they made a Cream of Rice, maybe I'll try it! You can make your own rice cereal if you want, that way you know exactly what's in it. I've never done it, but it doesn't look too difficult:
