When you got your first period?

Were you prepared and knew what was happening?

--Summer after 5th grade, so I was...11, I knew what to expect and was prepared, or so I thought... I wasn't expecting my first to be very light, and just brown blood.

Don't laugh at me. I got my first period when I was 14, at Disneyland, wearing white jeans. Not so bad, except I didn't realize it until I got home.

I was 13, I think 2 months shy of turning 14. I got it after school one day. I had been waiting on it so it didn't really surprise me. I was prepared.

I remember telling my mom that evening and her hugging me.

Catherineclare - My mom was relieved. She thought something was wrong with me because I hadn't started yet

Awww, some girls just start later than others. You know I was late to start among my friends, but I was always regular, while they weren't. I think girls start a lot earlier today due to all of the hormones in meat and dairy. Look at how they develop so quickly today!

I don't remember how old I was maybe 12 or 13 and it was in the summer and I was home. I don't know if I was 'prepared' for it but looking back I wanted it. Now I want it to go away

Is it sad that I can't remember? I'm pretty sure I was 13 though.
I don't even like this topic, makes me so nervous. Kayla is almost 12 and I'm just waiting and hoping she doesn't get hers until 13 either.
I was ready, knew what it was and what to expect.
I think one of the best books to let a girl Kayla's age read is, "Are you there God, it's me, Margaret.". I read it when I was about 12 and it really lets you know it's normal and ok and not to be ashamed or embarrassed.

I was 11. I was definitely the youngest of my friends and was not prepared at all. I just thought I was dying.

Paula- I read that book over and over back in the day! Although I remember being a little confused because, correct me if I'm wrong, they talked about the pads with the little belts right? I remember having to ask my mom!

I also get how this isn't a topic you want to discuss. My 11 year old is starting to enter puberty I think and it's depressing. The poor boys face has already started to break out a bit and I feel so bad for him. I still think of him as a little boy

When you got your first period? I was 13 and a half (got it 4th of July)

Were you prepared and knew what was happening? I was totally prepared...I had been WAITING for it. I felt like the last girl in the world to get her period. It was the summer before ninth grade and I felt like it was an eternity I loved it for about three months...then was over it! Lol.

I started when i was 12. I remembered i had stayed home from church because i wasn't feeling well. I remember being embarrassed to tell my mom I had started.

I keep waiting for Ashleigh and Madisyn to start. Ashleigh will be 12 in February. I don't think any of her friends have started yet. Madisyn will be 10 in March, early but she started developing breasts last year (she's already bigger than Ashleigh).I heard within a year of developing breasts that you start menstrating. Not sure if that's true or not, but if it's the case Madisyn should start soon.

Yeah Paula I believe pads used to have to hook on to these little belts! Days before adhesive I guess!

I don't think the breast thing is all that true. I started getting little nubbins in 5th grade and kept developing but my period didn't start till 8th grade. My grandmother was really late. She had a very womanly figure and didn't start until she was 16!

I don't think the breast thing is true either. Kayla has had boobs for well over a year and she hasn't started.
Me.. I'm still waiting to get breasts.

And all I can think of is the belt things that you wear after a c-section. They were HORRIBLE!!
Thankfully when I had Em and Abby, I got the mesh panties.

Here's a thing from the history of pads on wiki lol!

Later an adhesive strip was placed on the bottom of the pad for attachment to the saddle of the panties, and this became a favoured method with women. The belted sanitary napkin quickly became unavailable after the mid-eighties.

I remember my mom telling me about them and saying they were horrible and leaked. So happy we've improved in this area lol!

I think I started the week before 8th grade. Most of my friends had started and I was starting to get worried when mine hadn't come. I've enjoyed not having my period for much of the last 3.5 years

I was 11.5 and I had read all about it, so I knew what to expect.

My oldest dd started going through puberty, a few years ago. I got her the book The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book when she was around 10, and began asking questions. It sometimes helped to answer them better than I could.

19 October 1995. Yes, I remember the exact date. It was my mothers birthday (and 14 years later the day after Lucy's!) I was in my last year of primary school. I was at school when I got it. I remember I run sobbing to the school nurse. I knew what was going on but I didn't like it. Not much has changed there.
