Update on my cousin's baby Olivia (the 26 weeker) since I've had many ask.

She's about 1ish pounds. I wanna say like 1 and 1/4, I know it's not more than that. She was doing really well actually. She'd had a real stool and was even tolerating some contact. Last week her vitals and such started going into extreme distress whenever she'd get touched. Her abdomen started getting really distended and looked a little bruised. Turns out she has Necrotizing Enterocolitis (which is actually NOT the first time we've had a baby in our family have this) which is bad enough but is also causing an infection. She was transferred to the NICU at one of the childrens hospitals here where they inserted a peritoneal drain. She's doing a little better since then. She tolerated the care the nurse and respiratory therapist supplied without any drastic change in her vital signs yesterday. They are still keeping her sedated because it keeps her from fighting the oscillating ventilator. But can't move on to any real surgery to repair her intestines until she is more consistently stable.

That's all the most recent info I know. I have to wait and here everything from my aunt since neither my cousin or grandmother is talking to me or my mom now, which doesn't really bother either of us. Since my mom and aunt aren't talking either my aunt filters all the updates to my mom through me. It's one big nasty ball of drama.

Picture from when she first got transferred to the childrens hospital.

Oh wow...how scary. I hope she is on the mend soon. I know she's got a long road ahead of her.

remind me her story again, with my sister going through all of this pre-term labor--i just need/want some hope. She's only 21 weeks, did your cousin have problems early on?

Well on top of having PCOS there was also something messed up with her uterus so she wasn't even supposed to be able to ever get pregnant. Her doctor basically put her on bedrest as soon as she found out but told her not to really form any attachments since it was unlikely her uterus would handl3 the pregnancy. Then at her 26 week appointment they noticed that the baby had stopped growing and blood was getting into the placenta. It was either take the baby out then or have her die.

She's about a month old now.
