I posted this in the mom's of toddlers board but wanted to get more opinions. Here's the background....my daughter turned 2 last month and has been exhibiting some signs of potty training readiness, not many, but some. She doesn't like poopy diapers and would occasionally (rarely) tell us if she was wet. One week ago I decided to start potty training since I am off week with a new baby until January 2nd. I went right to underwear and just let her run around that way. The first day was great, only one accident, 2nd day she went to day care from 8:30-11:30, one accident, then had about 6 more at home. The 3rd and 4th day were great, no accidents!! Fast forward 2 days to Christmas which was a disaster. We had only been putting her in a pull-up for naps and at night and we resorted to putting her in a pull up on Christmas day after 2 accidents in the morning and 2 the day before. The problem is that she didn't seem to mind the pull-up at all and went right back to peeing in it like it was a diaper. She never tells us if she has to pee, but will only go if we put her on the potty (and sometimes she screams if we put her on the potty). I am ready to give up and go back to diapers because I feel like the concept isn't clicking, but I hate to give up on the hard work she/we have put in over the past week. I am wondering if you guys think I should hang it up and if she just doesn't seem ready yet. She also has never stayed dry throughout the night, but she sleeps about 11 hours straight and everytime she gets worked up about something she pees. If we are outside playing she'll pee and not even seem to notice. Thank you so much for any help.

Hi Stephanie: I think she is on her way so do not give up as you'll have to pass through this stage whenever you start. We went through some stages when I thought nothing was clicking with her but she was getting it, just not showing it the way I would like.

I found the Elmo DVD on potty training very helpful. Lolu loved it and that really helped wrap it up. Also if possible make up a song to sing when she wants to go. Lolu has been telling us for a long while now but when they taught them a song in school she was even more excited to sing the song to let you know" Also, in the beginning I took her every hour (we started early at 15 months and were totally done with day and night by 19 months); they also took her every hour for me at daycare. When we travelled (driving or fliying) we always had a potty. It was a lot of work but it was very much worth it at the end. Once she was more verbal, she started telling us when she wants to go. The night she pretty much just stopped by herself, never had to wake her up once. I was actually waiting to start training her for the night when I noticed that her diaper was always dry at night so just stopped night diapers old turkey.

During the training she went back and forth several times that my dh wanted me to ditch it but I hung in there and here we are today. Just hang in there' she'll be trained before you know it.

Sounds like us! Caroline will potty but not regularly. I also used panties but after so many accidents and taking care of a newborn I went back to diapers. I was putting her on the pottie every 15 minutes but she still managed to pee in between! She also wakes up soaked in the mornings. Pull-ups aren't effective. She treats them like a diaper. I think consistency is the key. Sounds like she is doing great. I went to target and bought some of the thicker underwear to try. At least she'll get the feeling of wetting herself but maybe will save my furniture?? I'm hopeful. I plan to try them this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well after 9 days of getting nowhere at all, I went back to diapers. Pull-ups didn't work for us either because she kept calling them diapers (even though I called them her special "sleeping" underwear). As soon as the diaper was back on it was like she never missed a beat and she went right back to peeing and pooping in them. She will ocasionally come ask me to change her, but she has never mentioned the potty or ventured towards it since. I am going to give it some time and look for more signs. She is in day care twice a week and they still take her to the potty every hour so she's still getting it there. I swear potty training is the hardest thing we have done in the past 2 years. Now with an infant and being back to work it's going to be tough, but we will do it eventually!! Good luck to all moms of toddlers!
