I know I rarely post here nowadays, but I wanted to come and air my concerns about Kirsty's speech with regards to the "s" sound

Does anyone else's child have issues with saying "s"? It comes out as "th" for Kirsty. I'm so so paranoid and concerned she has a lisp. Not that I think it is a bad thing, I don't want her to get teased at school

I am not an expert, but at this age I don't think there are any major concerns with them not pronouncing certain letters correctly..... they have to be older to be of the age where they are expected to say things exactly correct based on overall development guidelines, etc. So I think it is fine based on that. I know that at certain ages there are certain sounds they simply cannot do yet, and as they get a little older they can.

S is one letter Nicholas can say, but there are other letters that he doesn't always do correctly...like a lot of times when he says hand, he sounds like he says sand, but he will say hand correctly sometimes.

Charlie has the opposite problem. He can say "s," but he can't say "th." (It comes out as "d"). But Charlie also has a tongue tie that he's had since birth that we never got clipped, so I am still a little anxious over whether that might be what's affecting his pronunciation.

I did find this guide online. Children?s Speech: When Should a Parent be Concerned? ? Part 1 It says that it's normal for some children not to pronounce the "s" sound correctly until the age of 7. So I wouldn't worry about it yet!

Quote:
A loosely-drawn developmental scale for standard American speech production would look something like the following:

By age 3 — vowels p, b, m, n, d, g, h

By age 4 — k, t, th, f, v, ng, j, ch

By age 5 — sh, zh

By age 7 — l, r, s, th

I wouldn't worry. Just try to enjoy the cuteness. Speech therapy is extremely effective if it comes to that, but I'll bet you that it won't!
