I'm 3 weeks and 5 days pg (I think).

I will have to go to work full-time after the baby is born. I'm allowed 12 weeks if I apply for FMLA. We automatically get 6 weeks for vaginal, 8 weeks for C-section.

Two questions for mama's that may know this:

1.) Is the "12 weeks" FMLA allows seperate from the 6-8 they automatically give; or, is the 6-8 INCLUDED in the 12 weeks?

2.) When should I notify my HR about my pg and that I need to apply for FMLA? I'm worried I can't apply for it, b/c now that I'm pg, I may be considered a "pre-existing condition" w/my pregnancy.

Sorry if that's silly---I'm 24, very new in the workforce.

It all depends on your workplaces leave policies. For me, the 12 weeks allowed by FMLA is included in the 6-8 weeks from my employer. The first 6-8 is paid by my short-term disability depending on type of birth (vaginal vs. c-section). If I want any more time off than that, it is not paid. So definitely check on that. Also, FMLA ONLY applies if you have been with that employer for 1 full year. Pregnancy IS NOT a pre-existing condition! Give your HR a call and let them know you are pregnant and you need to know what steps to take to apply for leave whenever you are ready to let your employer even know you are pregnant. I apply for my leave 1 month before my EDD. If anything happens before then it just gets fast-tracked to approval.
