It all depends on your workplaces leave policies. For me, the 12 weeks allowed by FMLA is included in the 6-8 weeks from my employer. The first 6-8 is paid by my short-term disability depending on type of birth (vaginal vs. c-section). If I want any more time off than that, it is not paid. So definitely check on that. Also, FMLA ONLY applies if you have been with that employer for 1 full year. Pregnancy IS NOT a pre-existing condition! Give your HR a call and let them know you are pregnant and you need to know what steps to take to apply for leave whenever you are ready to let your employer even know you are pregnant. I apply for my leave 1 month before my EDD. If anything happens before then it just gets fast-tracked to approval.
