My name is Jenn, i'm 26 from NY and I'm a mom to a wonderful 2 yr old boy. We are currently expecting baby # 2 and couldn't be happier.
I am confused though!
When I went to my primary doc and found out I was pregnant she gave me an EDD of 3/10 based on my LMP. A few weeks later, I go to my 1st prenatal visit and had a vaginal ultrasound. The doc said I looked about 8 weeks and everything including the heartbeat looked good. We go sit in his office and he gives me a due date of 3/9, based on my LMP. The thing is, for a few months prior to conceiving, my period was all whacked out. I can't understand why the doc would be giving me a due date based on my LMP, rather than the ultrasound. Furthermore, shouldn't the ultrasound tell him EXACTLY how far I am rather than "u look about 8 weeks"? I'm so confused/frustrated. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Take care and congrats to all you mommy 2 be's here!!
From my experience (2nd baby), the ultrasounds before 11-12 weeks are rougher estimates, due to how the baby measures, and much after that the accuracy decreases as well. But I had a dating U/S for my first (got pregnant immediately after a miscarriage) and they said it had to be done around 11-12 weeks to be really accurate. So, for this pregnancy, I was told at about 7ish weeks that my due date was around 3/4, but at my 12 wk U/S, I was told that my baby was really measuring 11wks 6d, with a new edd of 3/2/10.
With my first baby, I was also given an EDD based on my LMP, which had occured 4-5 months earlier, thanks to my miscarriage. I have no idea where that number comes from!
Hi Jenn and welcome to the group. I am Dayna and this will be our second child as well. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
As far as your due date, my doctor initially went with LMP which would have made me due February 28th but I was charting and knew that I didn't ovulate at day 14. So we did an ultrasound when I wasn't even 6 weeks yet and it revealed that I was more correct. They changed my DD to March 4th (I thought it was either the 2nd or 3rd). From what I have heard, the earlier you do an ultrasound the more accurate it is for determining due date. I would think that they should go off of the ultrasound or at least take it into consideration. I think I would definitely bring it back up at your next appointment and at least talk about why they want to go off of your LMP rather than the ultrasound. How far apart at the due dates with each method?
-Dayna.
With the lmp method I am now at 12 wks 2 days. Going by ultrasound I'm at 10 wks 2 days....so the methods are exactly 2 weeks apart. I will definately be voicing this concern at my next appt which is on 9/15...i should have mentioned it on the spot but but there was so much info being given to me that it kinda threw me off till I left. it's just really annoying me to not know exactly how far along you are. 2 weeks is a huge difference when we are so anxious, lol!

Yeah 2 weeks is definitely a big difference. I would definitely mention it at your next appointment. And I would keep on mentioning it at visits after that if you keep on measuring different from LMP due date. It is definitely important to not think you are further along then you are. Let us know what your doctor says.
