We live in an apartment and I would like to keep furniture to minimum so that we aren't over-crowded with "stuff" everywhere. We have an extra long dresser in our bedroom, which was purchased with the intentions of getting a changing table pad and putting it on one half of the dresser. But now I have these great baskets holding our cloth diaper stuff and I'm not sure if I want to move them, haha.
Since we are in such a small area, would it be easier to keep a stocked caddy of diaper stuff, lay a large prefold (toddler sized) on the carpet/couch/bed depending on where we are and just change him right then? I know some people don't even use the changing table and I'm wondering if we are going to be those people.
We don't plan to get a changing table. What we may do is get a short but wide dresser and have a lip installed on the top to make it a changing table area.

I never used the changing table with DS, It ended up just holding junk and odds and ends! lol I am planning on getting a changing table pad and putting that on top of the baby dressar (its only 3 1/2 ft high or so)

The dresser/hutch we're getting is big enough to lay a changing pad down. So we'll so that.. But I honestly don't know how often we'll use the changing table. I can see it being used after bathtime.. But I'll prob have dipes & wipes out in the living room for day time use and what have you. I think a changing table that is JUST a changing table is pointless. But that's my opinion.
With my son, his pack and play had one on it and that is pretty much all we used. That is all I plan to get this time as well. We did buy a dresser thing that came with a changing pad on top, but we never used it. The dresser was a good buy though, it has a mini closet and shelves and drawers.
I doubt I'll get one, any flat service will do, and it's added expense. Unless my dh's parents are really wanting to get a whole set then i'll use it.. however I don't need one.

If space is an issue you can definitely get by without one.... but if you can find the space I think they are worth getting. We still use ours for our son (well DH does lol, I can't lift him that high right now). It was so much easier having something higher up to change the baby on and not hurt our backs. And it was great having the storage under it as well. We just prefer taking our son into one room for diaper changes rather than have stuff stashed all over.
Personally, I don't like them. So we've never gotten one or used one with either of the boys. I have some waterproof changing pads (like basinette size) that I just lay on the couch, floor, bed, or wherever we are. I'm also tall (5'9") and I find that I have to stoop too much to use a changing table and it kills my back.
I'm 5ft 10 and didn't even think about that! DH is tall as well. When I think about it, I picture us just grabbing the organizer thing and throwing down a prefold and changing him wherever we are. Like I said, we are in a small space so I wouldn't be going more than.....15 feet to grab the organizer, wherever it is.
Of course, when I picture things, Nolan is also the easiest baby in the history of babies and never cries or pees on me.
We had one and never used it. Our pack n play came with a changing station and since I couldnt make it up to DS' room b/c of c/s we used that. It was the floor from then on! We wont use one with this baby either.

I remember times in the beginning where poop literally came out in a stream (like a fountain) and hit the wall.... I am glad we had the changing table for that reason lol.... if I had been changing him on the couch on a pad or blanket it likely would have gone past the blanket and all over the couch... likewise on the floor/carpet. Same with the occasional urine stream. I always find it so funny that most people NEVER use them, since I love it lol. It just goes to show everyone's needs are different with a child... oh and I am 5'7" and dh is 6' and there is no hunching over to us the table.

ITA. We still use ours for DD. I have back problems, and I wouldn't be able to keep bending over to change diapers as often as newborns need them changed. I also like that I don't have to worry about poop or pee getting everywhere during a diaper change. It is more of an issue with the boys peeing when newborns and then poop later when the child becomes more active and doesn't want to cooperate with the diaper change. I have other kids running around and don't want to have to deal with a possible mess in the middle of where the kids are playing .

yes I do think it also helps with routine.... because they most likely WILL go through a stage of fighting diaper changes and if you are constantly changing wherever you do them it won't be as routine to them... at least in theory.
And though it's not a huge issue, and I am in no way saying it bothers me personally, there might be people that are uncomfortable at your house if you all of a sudden whip your baby's diaper off and start changing them right then and there... especially if they all of a sudden have a poop or pee fiasco lol. And having a boy, I have actually had people like my sister (who's daughter runs around naked still at 4) get all weirded out when my son ran by her once without a diaper because he was a boy.... not my problem that she was weirded out, but still there are people who aren't comfy with it.

Dont plan on getting one... Think they are a waste of space and rarely get put to use!!! Just my opinion though

We didn't have one until we started using cloth diapers. Once we were usuing cloth, I wanted a "home" for all of the diaper stuff. ya know? With sposies, I just had a package of diapers and a tub of wipes both upstairs and downstairs and didn't worry about a changing table. Now, though... I love mine and hate when I have to change her on the floor.
I didn't want to spend th emoney on one with DD BUT then 5 months into I was liek I WANT MY BEDROOM back... (we had been chaging diapers on our dresser and on the couch in the family room) and I also found it way too hard on my back to do it on the bed or floor or couch. So we got one. Best purchase by far!!
In fact, I still change diapers on it and Sadie is 2. My back hurts to lift her now so she just clims up while I support the table and there you have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You could try to get a used one?
I've changed the diapers of 2 boys and yes you do get your pee streams but you get them wherever you are and the pads I have were always big enough to catch it all. Plus after the first few times you get sprayed you get quicker and better at getting that diaper on top before it gets everywhere. Can't say I ever had the shooting poop thing though, that would be interesting for sure! LOL
We attempted to use the changing table thing on our pack n play but abandoned it after about a week because my back couldn't take it, it was awful! I usually prefer the floor especially when the baby gets mobile because they can't roll off the floor and get hurt. Plus we usually stay in the play room for the majority of the day so everything is always right there and I don't have to go upstairs or in another room to change the baby and leave the other kids.
