So it's official, I have gestational diabetes. I am so upset. I have to meet with the nutritionist and get a glucometer. They are hoping that it can be controlled with diet and not meds. The part I am really upset about is that they told me since I have GD I have a 50% chance of getting diabetes when I am older. Which I shouldn't be so surprised about since many of my older family members has diabetes.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Oh I am so sorry. I know how you feel, I was really worried about this while waiting for my 3 hour results. The good thing is GD is easily controlled and I'm sure you and your LO's will be just fine, but I'm sure it is hard to hear you are at a higher risk when you get older. I say take one thing at a time and don't stress too much over that because you have no control over it. We are here when you need to vent.

Hi! I have GD and I had it with my last pregnancy so you are not alone. Let me know if you have any questions.

The one upside of GD is that you most likely will get to have additonal U/S of your little one.

At least they caught the GD now, and hopefully it can be controlled with diet.. It really, really stinks though

And now that you know you have a higher chance of developing diabetes when you're older, you can prevent it now.. Eating healthy, a good varied diet, low-fat, and cutting sugar out more now, and of course, exercise.. Your chances are significantly higher to getting diabetes the older you are, if you are overweight.

I hope everything goes okay the rest of the pregnancy, and I really really hope that the GD can be controlled.. Good luck hun! *hugs*

I'm sorry! Hopefully the change in diet will be easy and you won't have to resort to medication.

I'm so sorry! I totally understand how frustrating it is, I posted earlier in the week about the same thing. I am borderline GD so I got the glucometer last week and the meal plan to follow from the nutritionist. It takes more time to plan your meals and portions, etc. but if you're lucky, like I am so far, it could be enough to control your glucose levels without insulin. BUT, there are no garantees, even if you follow the plan perfectly, so don't get down on yourself if the diet in itself isn't enough. They will monitor you closely, and it will mean more time at home preparing meals and more appts, but the good part is knowing that your babies will be healthy and so will you, because uncontrolled GD can cause several issues to arise, so it's worth getting it under control.

I was really down about it, but now it's been a few days and I'm feeling much more accepting, having done a lot of research, etc. But yes, it puts both us and our LOs at a greater risk for type 2 diabetes later on in life or in subsequent pregnancies, which really sucks. But the good part is that we know we can manage it...my doc says that many women pass the glucose test, then develop GD later on in the pregnancy but never have to go for another test so they don't even know they have developped it later on, leaving them untreated for it. I guess we are ''lucky'' (for lack of a better word) to be able to be proactive now, right?

I sure hope you get past this bump in the road and remember, only a few months left and all this will be behind us. And like Barbara said, you should be getting more U/Ss done, so that should be good! I'm looking forward to seeing my baby once a week from 32 weeks up until the end! Plus, my doc told me she won't let me pas my due date because of this, so I know for sure I will have my baby on or before April 7th, so that's another mental goal I have to hang on to.

Big hugs Lizzy, and if you ever want to talk PM me anytime!
