When you go on maternity leave, are you responsible for making all of your plans or just the first 2 weeks or nothing at all? Just wondering...I know I still have some time but the principal hasn't made it very clear as to what my responsibility is. Thanks!

I actually have no idea! I am a bit of a control freak so i am working on actual plans for each day. But I teach high school special ed, so it is important that the sub have a general idea of what my students are and are not capable of. I am going to have the final written too so that is all ready to go. I don't know if that is required or not.

I know other teachers have just left guidelines - like do this chapter this week and this topic this week, etc. And the subs had more creative license to create their own activities. I am fine if my sub wants to do this, but I also want plans so that they don't have to do that if they don't feel comfortable.

I think it is different too if you teach elementary vs. secondary. I have planned through the end of March and am working on the rest of the year so that if by chance I go early, evverything is ready.

I am interested to hear what the other teachers are planning. Is anyone going back for the end of the school year or are you waiting until the fall?

I asked my principal and she said we just have to do the first 2 weeks which is what I am doing. I am in a really good situation though because my sub student taught kindergarten at my school and is really good so she knows exactly what she is doing.

I am basically going to do my regular lesson plans as I would do them for the month of April. I will also leave her some type of file organized with any information she may need to know such as where to find certain things. temperments of the kids, any necessary paperwork, etc.

She knows the other 2 teachers I work with so they will help her if she needs it. I will probably write something much more specific up for the first day explaining my daily routine and everything, but other than that I figure the sub is certified and getting paid more than a regular sub would so they should be able to figure things out!
