Diana's weight thread got me thinking about this, since a couple people mentioned BF'ing and losing weight. I am definitely planning on exclusively BF'ing, but I don't want that to interfere with my weightloss goals (while, at the same time, I don't want my weightloss goals interfering with BF'ing).

The breastfeeding instructor that I took a class with said that breastfeeding burns something like 500 extra calories a day. That seemed like a bit much, so could somebody verify that for me? I want to know if it's okay to diet (as in, eating less and eating healthier) while BF'ing and still produce enough milk for Caleb's needs.

I did it with DS and had no problem. While I didn't eat less I just watched what I ate and choice things that where better then when I was pregnant. An d yes you can burn like 500 calories a day just from BF. I don't start dieting or any exercise till I know my milk it fully in and have a good production. You still need to maintain a good diet for your milk production. I have heard that exercises can change your milk taste a little but you baby should be okay after a few days.

Do you think waiting the usual 6 weeks PP is long enough to see what one's millk supply will be like? Because I had planned on starting my weightloss regime immediately after the 6 week PP wait.

For sure. With DS I started sooner because of DDP and that's what my DR suggested. Really I might just wait till 6 weeks just to wait.

6 weeks should be enough time. I know Weight Watchers has a plan just for breastfeeding women. I found that nursing made me super super hungry, but I just made sure to eat healthy foods. You don't want to go crazy restricting calories, but you don't need to eat a ton either.

Yes, breastfeeding burns up to 500 calories a day. You can't severely diet while nursing, as it can make you lose your milk supply. But eating healthy, and exercising would be perfectly fine to lose weight. Just listen to your body - if you are hungry eat, if you are not hungry don't.

Just make sure you still consume enough. If you don't eat enough for yourself, your baby and to support the exercise, your supply will drop and your body will go into starvation mode clinging onto everything you do eat, healthy or not. That's what happened to me and I ended up gaining a good deal or weight before someone slapped me upside the head. Once I began to eat, I started to lose.

It's good to know about WW. After I have the baby, I wanted to look into it. (not really for me, but for hubby, but I figured I reap the benefits too).

And make sure you stay hydrated. Any time my sister would start an exercise routine her milk would start to dry up. But she would hard core run on the treadmill. So she had to put that off until the baby was weaned. I am going to start after the 6 week wait.

To be honest, I probably won't ever try to get into something hardcore again. Even before pregnancy, I had to cut back on how rigorous my exercise regime was, because my hips and knee joints were getting so bad from the jogging/running. (I had childhood arthritis and also multiple leg injuries, so my legs just plain SUCK.) So, I probably don't have to worry about the extra stress causing my body to dry up. As long as I stay well-hydrated, I'm hoping that's not a problem at all!

I ate ALOT while I was breastfeeding... I was as hungry as when I was first pregnant. But I know I must have been lucky because I still lost a lot of weight... was very thirsty as is typical but I don't really drink anything other than milk and water, and while I say I ate alot, I guess most of it was reasonably healthy.

THIS time round, I just have to remember to cut back on the eating when I stop breastfeeding.....!!!!!
