I will be ringing my OB on Saturaday, but I just noticed that my pantiliner smelt almost like ammonia, or like some kind of chemical on it.... I did google it, and I wish I didn't because now I'm worried. People have said it can be normal, but some said it could be either having something wrong with your liver, amniotic fluid leaking, bacterial infection, kidney/bladder infection or not drinking enough water, which I know I didn't drink much today. I will make sure to drink lots of water from now on and hopefully, that's why it happened...

The only reason I am really worried is because my DS tickled me today and as I jerked away I had the worse pain in my lower abdomin for a while, like a strong ligament pain pulling feeling and now I'm worried that it could be amniotic fluid leaking. I don't feel like I'm leaking at all, it's just I noticed the smell once today....

Has this happened to anyone else? And, if so, what was it from?

Urine will have an ammonia smell if it's concentrated which yours probably is if you haven't been drinking lots. Amniotic fluid usually has no smell so maybe you just leaked some urine. I have had this smell on a pantiliner in the past particularly after wearing it all day and I wasn't pregnant or had any infection. It might just be a reaction of your normal secretions and the liner. If you are worried, I'd definitely check with your dr.

I have the ammonia smell on mine too. So far all my stuff has been fine. And it probably is from not drinking enough water. I noticed when I drink a lot during the day the smell is less if not there. But I don't drink all that much water to begin with.

I am so glad you posted this, pretty gross, but when I came home from work and had to PEE so bad...I noticed my panties were wet. After thinking about this post, I smelled them....yuck, so I was not worried about amniotic fluid since it did have a smell.

I went to l&d over a long weekend a few weeks ago because I noticed the same thing. I was sure it was bacterial vaginosis because I had that once before a few years ago, and was worried about the risk of miscarriage. I called the doctor on call and he wasn't very reassuring, he basically said if that's what it was, I had the risk of miscarriage. So I spent about four hours in l&d getting it checked out. They swabbed and stuck a catheter in to test for uti and bv. Both were negative. I still notice it, but chalked it up to super sensitive preggo nose. So anyway, you should probably get it checked out just in case, but that's my pointless story!

I was told by several L&D nurses that amniotic fluid has a strong sweetish smell that is unmistakable. It wouldn't smell like ammonia.

The reason I was told this is because with my last pgcy, I was freaked out by fluid I found on my panties that I was worried was amniotic fluid. But it turns out I was leaking something else - pee! When I would laugh or cough, pee would come out in little trickles & I didn't even feel it. So embarrassing! But that's what happens sometimes when you're pg.

Yes, I am sure that is what mine was....it is embarassing. I think I hadn't peed in a REALLY long time, was holding it on the drive home from work and my bladder just released some of it. Joy of pg!!

I had the same freak out when I was pregnant with Gaby, and my m/w told me that it was possibly the chemicals inside the pantyliner, mixed with a little wee that had managed to escape...
