On Friday night after dinner, the kids were running around the house and everything was fine. Then Luke caught up with Delia and tripped her and she fell into our pantry door. She turned around crying, but we could tell she didn't hit the door that hard, she was just more scared and mad at her brother. Anyway DH and I are looking her over to she if she had any bumps or if she bit her lip or something and she is crying. Then she cries all her breath out and is crying with no sound. She sometimes holds her breath like that, so I blew in her face which usually helps her to take a breath, but this time it did not. All of a sudden she starts turning blue, she arched her back, and her eyes rolled back in her head. DH laid her down on the floor and her eyes were closed, she was still blue and still not breathing, so I call 911. I wasn't sure what was happening to her, and I was afraid she was having another seizure (I think I posted before that she had a benign seizure condition as an infant that goes away after 1 month of age). By the time I was talking to the 911 operator, she woke up (she was only out for 1 min. maybe less - felt like an eternity) and was able to talk and tell us that she fell. But she was acting very tired and wanted to be held. The EMT's got there and talked to her and said she should be checked out. By the time we were ready to get in the ambulance, (like 5 min. after the event took place) she was up walking around and acting like a ham for the EMT's - getting her own shoes on and everything. At the hospital, they said it is hard to tell whether or not she had a seizure, but the doctors consensus was that she probably had a "breath-holding" spell. Which I guess is common in small children. They wanted to watch her overnight, just to be sure nothing else happened (which it didn't). I guess during these "breath-holding" spells, seizures can sometimes occur. So they want her to follow up with her neurologist as well. I just hope that this is a simple thing and that the neurologist won't think she has to go back on anti-seizure meds. After reading up on these spells, I don't think she should have to. But WOW what a scary night for us...
aw I'm sorry. Seizures or any event like that can be so scary. I doubt the neurologist will start anti epileptics again. If it was a random event...she was just sitting there calm and happy and it happened maybe, but they'd prob do an EEG first.
Keep us posted! I'm glad she doing ok now! Just for my own curiosity (I work at Childrens Hospital on the neuro floor so I deal w/ seizures, head trauma, etc) did she have seizures as an infant and grow out of them? Or did she have infantile spasms?
She had Benign Familial Neonatal Convulsions, which my DH, all of his siblings, mother and grandmother have all had. Everyone grew out of the seizures by 1 month of age, except DH's sister I think, who had her last one at 3 mo. Every child we have has a 50/50 shot of inheriting it. My DS did not have it, but DD did. I will be talking to the neurologist about little punkinseed as well since we will be having a follow up appt. with him anyway. I really hope (and kind of think for some reason) that this baby will not have them. But, it couldn't hurt to let the neurologist know beforehand just in case. I know it is weird to have a "feeling" about that, but I sort of knew when I was pregnant with DD that she would have them. And with DS, I wasn't worried about it. HMMM -
Oh wow, that's scary! I'm so glad that she's okay now! Hopefully she won't have to go back on meds or anything. That was scary enough to read, I can't imagine being there! Glad everyone's okay though!!
huh, interesting! I've only seen that once. It was so funny because it was a family and their little 2 wk old was hospitalized because of seizures. Mom and dad were like, oh, it's no biggie...all our other kids had them and dad had them when they were born.

That's interesting! DH's family was somewhat like this when DD had the seizures. His mom was very sad that we had to go through it and was understanding. But I felt like most of them, DH included, and even DD's doctors (incidentally the same dr's DH himself saw as an infant), thought it was no biggie. I was FREAKING out! Probably because of the fact that she developed a rash from the phenobarbital and the dilantin they gave her after that never worked, so her seizures were never controlled until she grew out of them. With DH's family, they were just given the phenobarb and everything was OK. I was afraid that since she was having more seizures, she would have more chance of damage, even though her seizures only lasted 15- 20 sec. I was worried until she started reaching her milestones. She's actually pretty advanced, and I'm lucky for that.
I'm sorry about your child! I had this happen with one of the children in my class (I'm an infant room teacher). She was crying in the swing and next thing I look over and she's turning purple and her eyes are rolling in the back of her head! I whipped her outta that thing so fast and shook her (my first instinct). And she started breathing, but stopped crying like nothing was wrong and acted tired. Well, she did it again one day when she was sat up on the mat. She started crying and turned purple, eyes rolled back and fell forward. We blew in her face and she snapped out of it like nothing happened! Her mom took her to the dr and they said that it's just her passing out when she cries and holds her breath. But I know how scary it is! GL with your child and I hope everything's okay!!!
Wow - how scary!! My little Sophia (21mo) had a febrile seizure a few months ago and that terrified me. It went on forever and it took several hours for her to fully come to her self. I am constantly watching her all the time for more (they say now that she's had one, she could have one to let us know a fever is on the way, not the other way around) and every little twitch she makes freaks me out a bit.. but so far so good. It does sound like she held her breath as you know how spasy seizures are. I don't think she would have bounced back so quickly with a seizure. STILL - scary all the same!! I hope all is well now?

A good friend of mine had a kid that would ' hold his breath' whenever he got hurt or angry and he would hold it until he passed out. I guess it is fairly common with little kids. I think it would be super scary to see. I know this mom would 'baby' the lil boy (and he is still a big ole STINKER!!) because she always feel scared he would do it again. (who can blame her though!! )

Thanks ladies! She had her follow up with our pediatrician today, and she said she looks absolutely fine. They really feel it was nothing more than a breath holding spell. I am going to follow up with the neurologist just in case, but they don't think there's anything serious going on. PHEW!
