Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you are from New Orleans or live there and can answer some questions for me?

I'm going to be relocating there this summer and have some questions about areas of town to live!

Thanks a million!
Fran

There are a couple of us that are in South Louisiana. I know that I am pretty familiar with Nola as we go down there all the time as well as have family down there. What are you needing help with? When are you relocating and why?

I am trying to figure out where the bad parts of town are and where the good parts are. We're looking to rent a place in either the Garden District or Uptown but aren't sure how far the good parts extend before the bad parts take over.

Example: looking at the map of the Uptown area, how far north is still a nice area? Is it unsafe up by Claiborne Avenue?

What about heading towards Audubon park in the area near Magazine street but south of St. Charles?

We're moving there this summer (hopefully by June 1st if we find a good place).
Thanks if anyone has info!

I'm from New Orleans, and my family is all still there! If you are open to looking outside the city itself, Metairie is nice and possibly less expensive.

LOL I'll scope it out more when we go again.

I know for myself and my own family I wouldn't move them right there. Not a chance in hell. The easiest and best way to know the type of area you are moving into is to scope it out yourself. If you find a place you like scope out the area for about 10 blocks. Nola is classic for being super nice then two blocks later you are in some really dangerous areas.

If I had to move to the are I would likely go towards Metarie or Kenner. That is just my own preference to the area. As much as I love the city I don't want to live in it.

I appreciate the info, everyone! I really want to live in the city though. I'm going to be working crazy hours at the hospital and don't want to have much of a commute. Plus, my hubby and I are way more city type people than suburbs and would like to live in the city, at least for a little while!

Understandable. For me Metarie is just as good as being in the city. It's basically city itself. I really think you should make a judgement trip for yourself. What we may consider the "bad area" may work fine for you.

My husband just got back from NOLA and it was NOTHING like he expected, he said the same as PP's that certain parts were nice but then other parts seemed very bad. A great resource, IMO, is to check the sexual offenders in the area on watchdog (usually higher crime=less desirable) and to check police logs for crime activity. When we moved, I actually called the police departments once I narrowed down streets and asked the reputation of that street and area HTH!

Thanks for the ideas! We're definitely going down there to check the areas out but won't be able to go for another couple of weeks. I'm trying to get an idea online, but it's hard. I spent a month there last summer but wasn't planning to move there at the time, so didn't really spend a lot of time looking at neighborhoods!

I like the idea of looking at the sex offender site. I found a crime website where you can enter in dates and it shows everything from simple theft to assaults and shootings. That was pretty useful in terms of narrowing down what parts of the city to look. Now just to find exact areas! Glad I have a couple of months!

Let me give you fair warning. A block away from the Garden District is crack row. Now the area near the zoo and the children's hospital is pretty nice, I'd want to live there if I could go back. It's been years since I've been down there and I only lived there for a short time.

What hospital are you going to work at?
