I am poking in from the May DDC. I am having such a hard time deciding how many newborn outfits or clothes to have on hand. I know that babies dont stay in newborn long, and all of the newborn clothes I see say for babies 5-8lbs and up to 20"long. What if your baby is born over 8 lbs, like 8.5, does that mean newborn clothes wont fit?

How long did ya'lls babies stay in newborn? What was their birth weight?

Thanks for your help mommas!

My son is also still mainly in newborn size clothing and almost 7 weeks old. He was born at 6lbs 8oz 20in, and though I haven't had him weighed very recently I can gaurantee that he is at least closer to 9lbs now. If it weren't for a length issue he would be able to wear them for quite a bit longer I think too, since he is rather thin just like my first son.

Mia was 9 lb 1 oz at birth, and she wore newborn clothes for a week or so...she still fits in some of them, but mostly she is in 0-3 mos. Mainly due to the length. I would buy a handful of newborn outfits, but more 0-3 month outfits.

I am REALLY glad we only bought one package of newborn diapers though. She was out of those pretty quickly. She could still technically FIT in them, but she kept having leaks so we moved up to size 1s.

Thank you ladies! I have about 5 or 6 summer dresses, a few tank top onsies and a boat load of regular onsies. I hope that is all I will need in newborn size. I am all set on 0-3 months, and that's what I was thinking I needed most of, seeing as DH is 6' and I am 5'10". We know baby girl is going to be long, so she may outgrow the length of newborn clothes. But all the newborn summer dresses are the ones that is just the dress and then bloomers, so the length shouldn't matter because she'll have bloomers. But I'm so scared to buy the onsie dresses that snap at the bottom, not knowing if she'll even fit at birth! Both DH and I were 22 inches when born... Lol

I am so happy for all of you, and I cannot wait to join in on momma-hood! Thanks again for your help!

My DD was 6lb 11oz at birth (with a low weight of 6lb 4oz) and gained kind of slowly. She was too small for 0-3mo clothes until she was like 2-3 months old. DS, on the other hand was not much bigger at birth (7lb 2oz with a low of 6lb 10oz), but is already growing out of his NB stuff at 3 weeks old.

I too was fearful of buying too many newborn clothes so we got a lot of 0-3 month stuff, but when my son was born he was 6lbs 10 oz and 18 inches long so a lot smaller than we thought. He was too small for newborn at first so we had to go and buy some preemie outfits! I would say get some newborn clothes and when your baby is born you can always send someone out to get more!

Andrew was 8.5, 21 inches at birth, and is now closer to 10# (he was 9.8 at his pedi appt on Tuesday, and prior to that was 3oz shy of gaining 1lb in a week) and 21 3/4 last visit. He still wears most of his NB clothes, especially any sleepers/rompers where there aren't any feet on them. Some of the 0-3 month clothes are way too big, and some fit pretty good length-wise. Andrew's really narrow LOL. I second the NB dipes, pack up on size 1's.

Good luck and congrats!

ETA I'm 5'7 and DH is 6'1 and I was 5 days overdue if that helps.

My daughter was 8lb 3.9oz and 21in at birth and she just outgrew nb size (at 3wks old). It was the length that got too short for her, otherwise she would still be able to wear them.

My son is 8 weeks old and is out of newborn clothes. He wears the ones that say 0-3 or just 3 months now. The 3-6 are sometimes still big.

He was 7lbs 13oz at birth, but gained quickly (he was 10 days early). He's about 12 lbs now.

Logan was a preemie but was 6 pounds 7 ounces at birth. She stayed in newborn clothes until she was a little over 8 pounds and about 6 weeks old.

ETA: IMO onesies aren't sized right I think they run really small for their size.

oh and he is still in NB diapers right now as well at almost 7 weeks. I put a size 1 on him last night and it was pretty big still.

Brand of clothing will have a lot to do w/ it as well. I knew that my baby would likely be stick thin like my first and brands like Carters, and Gerber have always fit him the best since they tend to be narrower/longer. I find that most baby clothes are way too wide/short and can't imagine that most babies are really that short and fat lol.

oh and I am 5'7" and Dh is 6' and our oldest son is also quite tall for his age but born at 20in like my second son now.

jhett was 8 lbs 1 oz and wore preemie clothes home from the hosp. he is in newborn now, and he's 10lbs 5oz and 5.5 weeks old. i figured he would be small like my other son, and even though he was over 8 lbs, his body is still small. i think their bones are just heavy, b/c they were both tiny at birth. i do have jhett in size 1 diapers, but he would still fit in newborn, i just ran out and decided to go up to the next size since we already had them, instead of buying more newborns.

(eli will be 3 in july and 2t pants fall around his ankles lol.)

oh, don't even get me started on pants lol! Perrin is thin and NEVER fits pants. The proper size in length is usually about on track for his age, but then they are so dang wide you could fit two of him in there! And a lot of children's pants don't have belt loops. We end up getting the adjustable waist type pants but then they are so scrunched up it seems uncomfy so often times he runs around in highwaters lol.

DD is a little over 2 weeks old and she can still fit in newborn clothes. She's in size 1 diapers. She outgrew newborn diapers when she was about a week old. She was 6 lbs 15 oz when she was born and 20 inches long. She's also wearing 0-3 month sizes but they're still a little big on her depending on what brand the clothing is.

I'd say if you think you're having a big baby (like 8 or 9 lbs+) then go ahead and skip the newborn sizes and just go straight to 0-3 month.

My daughter is 5 weeks old, and is still in NB clothes and diapers. Though some onesies (Gerber, I believe. They run small) she wears 0-3 month size. And some of her NB outfits are starting to get small on her, mostly the pants.

My daughter was 7lbs 1oz & 19.5 inches at birth.. Got down to 6lbs 9oz. I am guessing she's around 8lbs now. Pampers new NB diapers go up to 10lbs now, rather then 8.
