I wanted to hold off on this post until at least after I have a chance to really post about my birth experience and share some photos of Lily however my mother's concern is going to win out so I'll use my little energy and post it now and then catch up with the photos & birth story later.

After Lily was born and checked out DH told me that they attending hospital ped said that her anus and vagina were REALLY close together. My first reaction was well what on earth does that mean, and how would you even "fix" that... he said they do appear separate and the meconia was passing through the anus so we'd talk to the ped later/the next day. I put it in the back of my head and figured if it was any sort of emergency they would be dealing with it immediately.

The next day one of the peds from the practice I picked (hadn't met any yet, just selected via word of mouth) came in and I asked him and he had the same sort of reaction I did, well sure they are closer together then normal but what are you going to do type of shrug. So I figured, ok well maybe its just because things are swollen on her. The next morning another ped came in and this time she brought it up and said that the skin between the vagina and anus is very pink and looks more like interior vaginal tissue then normal perineum skin and she is going to refer us to a pediatric surgeon when we go in late next week for our first ped visit. So again she said that right now everything is fine, she's urinating where she should, stool is exiting the anus and not the vagina but we need to make sure that internally they are not connected... now I again realize that if anyone was really worried they would have had me talking to a specialist right away but at the same time I obviously can't help but worry and be afraid, the very idea of my little newborn daughter having to have surgery or be put under is so freaking scary as is the idea of her having issues down there later in life.

Guess I'm just looking for T&P that it's nothing serious that requires surgery and any info if anyone has experience with it.

Thanks and I promise some photos and birth story over the rest of the weekend.

Candi, I don't have any experience or knowledge in this area, but I'm definitely thinking of you and precious little Lily! Please keep us posted on how the appointment goes.

My daughter had this too. When she was born she had only a sliver of skin, very thin, separating her anus and her vagina. We were referred to a surgeon who did a test (warning - the test is not pleasant. I wanted to throw up. They stick rods of various sizes in the anal and vaginal cavities) and concluded that she didn't need surgery. She is now almost 4 and while they are still close together as she has gotten older they have grown apart.

Thank you for all the T&P's ladies, and Beth a HUGE thank you to you for your post as well, as unpleasant as that sounds it still gives me hope that since they are separated on Lily maybe she'll be like your little one and not need any additional testing or surgery etc. I'll keep you all posted, I'm supposed to get the referral this coming week at her first ped appointment.

I know this thread is a few years old... but Mom At home..if you see this, can you let me know what the outcome was for your sweet little girl? We are going through the same thing with my daughter. A pediatric surgeon is saying she needs an operation to fix it... I'm not buying it though. My "mom" instincts are telling me she will be fine. The girl knows when she's going, pushes and hasn't been constipated once in her 7 months.... we are going to Cincinatti Children's Hospital for a 2nd opinion as soon as we can get an appointment!
