After I posted this morning about not knowing what to do (go to the hospital or wait it out at home for a while) I decided that we better just go. Contractions began around 5:30 this morning, woke DH up at 6:00 and we headed to the hospital. Dirt/gravel roads were manageable so it only took us 1 hour to get to the hospital instead of 1 1/2 - got to the hospital about 7:00 am. As of my appointment last Thursday I was a loose 2 cm dilated and only about 1/4 inch thick. By the time I got to the hospital I was 4 cm dilated.....5 cm by 8:00 am and had quite a scare!! Dr checked me during a strong contraction and baby must have moved because the doppler lost his heart beat. They looked and looked for it for about 1 minute or so with 2 different dopplers and couldn't find it. Dr decided to break my water so that they could attach the monitor to his head. Thank goodness he was okay!!Contractions got a lot stronger and a lot quicker after that. By 9:00 am I was 6 cm but super thin. Dr said a couple good contractions and I would be ready to push (my cervix would rapidly go from a 6 to a 10 because my cervix was soooo thin). Joshua Chamberlain was born at 9:38 am and gave us yet another scare. Dr had a hard time getting him to breathe once he was out - had a lot of fluid left in him because labor was so fast. He weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce and was 20 inches long. I am glad he wasn't any bigger being 5 days past due and all!! He is absolutely wonderful!! He loves to have his hands up by his face at all times - I think he is going to be a thumb sucker!
