My birth story is pretty boring, but that's the way I like births to go.
I was scheduled to have my water broken as my induction method on Monday morning. I was going for a VBAC, so they couldn't use pitocin or do a traditional induction. I was at 42 weeks and 3 days on Monday, and it was more than time for her to make an appearance!
I woke up around 3:30am on Monday the 28th with some intense contractions that were like 5-6 minutes apart. I stayed in bed for a while but was starting to wake up DH (he co-sleeps) with my tossing and turning, so I just got up and wandered around the house, browsed some JM, etc. I tossed some laundry in the dryer, blah blah blah. I tried to go back to sleep around 7:00, but I couldn't sleep through the contractions. I called L&D, but I didn't like the OB on call, and wanted to wait until 8:00 to go in.
L&D called me around 7:30 and asked if I was still planning on being induced. My doctor had never called me to tell me when to show up, so I'd originally been planning to call at 8:00, but as I was in labor I figured it really didn't matter. I woke up DH after L&D called. We tried to call my MIL who was our intended babysitter, but she didn't answer. So we called my SIL and woke her up to come over. DH had to pick her up (she's 18 and her car is crap, lol), and they got back around 8:00.
At 8:15ish we left for the hospital, stopped and got some breakfast, and got there around 9:00. My OB was there, and set me up to "induce" but checked my cervix first.. I was already at 8cm! So we decided to not break my water because it wasn't necessary.
I labored for another 2 hours, and then each contraction made me seriously want to push, but I was still only 8cm. I couldn't NOT push, so I ended up opting for an epidural so that I wouldn't want to. Blah. Oh well, what can you do? I got the epi around 11:40 (I remember glancing at the clock between contractions). Around 1:00 they came and checked me, and I was at 9.5, so they went ahead and broke my water. about an hour later (2:15?) they checked me again and told me I could push.
So I did some practice pushes with the nurse through two contractions, and when I started to push on a third, she told me to stop because the baby was definitely coming (I wanted to push with the contractions at 8cm because she was so low). As the OB walked into the room I started coughing, and the nurse told me to stop because the force was pushing her out. I pushed through one more contraction and out she came! And I only sustained a first degree tear, 2 stitches, and some road rash. The damage sustained is significant because with my first baby it was a 4th degree tear after 1.5 hours of pushing, and he was only 4oz more.
