Kelli's binky/pacifier/dummy post sparked a second conversation on what we call carbonated beverages. If you're interested (or just super bored!) this map shows you the different regional names for pop/soda -- remember, I'm a social studies teacher, which also means I'm a geography geek!

WOW! I didn't realize I was in the minority! I thought lots of people called it soda! I'm in the soda group! Who is going to join my team!?!?!

Too funny! I'm in the 50-80% range for the city where I grew up with "Coke" instead of soda or pop.

Pity my child Kelli -- our favorite channels are the History Channel (regular, international, AND military) and the National Geographic channel!!! Oh, and DH is a chemistry geek as well!!!

Soda? The only time I say soda is when referencing the fine Arm & Hammer product!

Well I actually call it soda pop... From my Northern California and Arizona soda areas before moving to the pop areas of Oklahoma. Humans are adaptable!

I'm a coke girl, always called it that.

me "I'll take a large Coke with easy ice"
Employee "What kind of coke you want"
me "Dr. Pepper please"

I don't hear soda very often, but I do hear pop from my NY relatives... with the mysterious a placed in there somewhere that sounds more like "paop"

This is an awesome map

From Michigan, too...Detroit area is ALL 80-100% pop...and I dated a guy from down south and he thought I was SO WEIRD calling it pop...he called it coke.

When I go to Florida I'm used to calling it soda. I can't get into calling it "coke".

That's a neat find! The map shows that people mostly say Coke where I live but I don't think I have ever heard anyone say that!

I guess I'm one of the others... My family (and most people I know) call them "soft drinks" and other people from nearby cities call them "cold drinks." The map says that we call them "cokes," but I've really never heard anyone call them that..

I grew up in Western Pennsylvania outside of Pittsburgh and that ENTIRE region is 80-100% PAWP.

DH's family is from Rhode Island and the New England states are basically 80-100% SODA. He lived in Florida for 13 years before meeting me though but his family stuck with Soda.

And I lived in Florida for 3 years before moving to upstate NY this past year... and MOST people I knew in FL still called it soda. I very rarely got the "coke" but yeah... they all cracked up if I slipped up and called it pop.

And up here we get soda, coke, pop, soda pop, etc. We have a restaurant so I'll have to ask what most customers usually refer to it as.... BUT we have a LOT of Canadians (some of which only speak French as we're not far from Quebec) and the town we are in is a VERY touristy area and people from all over come here for vacation. SO it's a good mix here, I'd say.

The map is definately correct for my area. We call it Pop here in Ohio. I went to college right in the middle of PA and people from east of our school called it soda and from west of the school called it pop. I had a lot of friends from NJ so we always argured about it.
