Ok ladies! I've heard some conflicting stories about whether or not a glass of wine or wine spritzer is ok.

I'll be honest here. I've never had a drink while pregnant and I used to have some strong convictions about women who drank while pregnant. However - I have always heard that a random glass of wine was ok.

My fiance and I got engaged in March in San Antonio.. and I found out 3 weeks later I'm pregnant. We haven't ever taken a trip without the 4 boys but are planning on it Labor Day weekend -back to San Antonio. I was actually thinking of having a wine spritzer.

I am always in such a hurry at my dr's office that I forget to ask his opinion. So, I'm asking you lades. Have any of you had one? How do you all feel about it?

(Sorry Marti - If everyone says no - I'll be stealing ideas from your post!)

I had a glass of wine when I went on my trip up north. We were staying at a super nice hotel that had a complementary wine and cheese hour, there was no way I could pass up a small glass of wine with my cheese and fruit.

I'm not against it. I think its a personal choice. I can say before i found out i did some heavy drinking the weekend before while out with some girl friends. And Jaden is fine. I also think its wise to ask the doctor before hand. I've heard some women drink a glass of wine before going to bed to help them sleep better. With my sleep struggles its tempting.

When I was pregnant with DS, I was in pain and was in labor but they sent me home because I wasn't dilating. The doctor told me unofficially to go home have a beer or two and have sex ! I had the beer and it felt great. I don't think an occasional drink in the late second/ third trimesters hurts. Some people take it too far and drink too much and I wouldn't drink in the first trimester though but that is IMO

I see nothing wrong with a glass of wine or wine spritzer. It is all about moderation. I would never have more than one at a time. I have had a glass of wine. In fact, in many countries it is not only socially acceptable to have a glass of wine, but recommended by doctors.

My dad always told me that when my grandma was pregnant with him and all of his siblings, she would drink a beer if she got constipated and it would fix the problem. When I was about 34 weeks pregnant with my son, I was severely constipated. Nothing was working. I drank maybe 3/4 of a beer and it fixed the problem!

lol! I have had wine in the 3rd trimester with both girls
In fact, my doctor told me to go home and have a half a glass and relax one day lol!!!
So I think its fine. I don't condone drinking while pregnant, but a glass here and there should be just fine.
At least my doctor says so and I've been just fine so far.

also want to add that sparkling grape juice taste a lot like wine and is a good replacement if you just want that "taste".

I think the occasional glass of wine is fine. I had half a glass of wine twice or three times with this pg.

Ditto!

I personally wouldn’t go throwing back shots or anything, but that is not what we are talking about here. Especially with a spritzer, you’re cutting the alcohol even more.

The only scenario in which I wouldn't drink is if alcohol was ever a problem before. It is best not to open Pandora ’s Box.

I agree- I think in the US we tend to go really overboard and into overprotective mode for many things.

In europe and south america it is not uncommon to have 1 glass of wine an evening and not have a baby affected by fetal alcohol syndrome.

14 babies die in 20 years due to crib bumpers? BAN them!

20 babies die due to dropped rail cribs? Ban them too!!

We live in a sue happy society and the result is a government that needs to 'protect us' from ourselves and where has that gotten us but a HUGE c-section rate and terrible infant and mother mortality rates when compared to the rest of the world.

I hope I dont sound overly angry or preachy as I LOVE the US!!! Its more a reflection of the ligitgeous society that we're in that tends to take things overboard. I'm not a huge drinker to begin with and have maybe had 1 glass of wine... but I wont be feeling guilty if I do want one

Cheers!

My doc says everything in moderation is safe

I work in the wine industry and so it is pretty unavoidable while tasting new vintages and such so I've had sips here and there, and I don't feel guilty about it. The baby is healthy and believe me, the generations before us drank a heck of a lot more and plenty of other stuff too!

I wouldn't drink any alcohol during pregnancy. It will still be there after the baby comes, so I can wait.

We don't know for sure that one glass of wine in okay. Maybe some woman have had wine while pregnant and they're babies were fine, but some aren't. How do you know you will be one of the lucky ones? I know it's a 'personal choice' but it's not a risk I am willing to take.

That is just how I feel about it, which is what was asked... if someone is going to drink who am I to stop them, right?

I absolutely agree. If you had such strong convictions about it in the past why would you even risk it at all now? I'm sure you'd probably be fine but would it have been worth it it the baby has a learning problem or something down the road. You will forever question if that was the cause.

I can completely respect those of you that chose to abstain from alcohol 100%. Kudos to you!

I just find it interseting what we (society) choose to take a stand on. One glass of wine is a huge no! but we (again society collectively) is ok with plopping kids in front of the TV to watch lord knows what with food prepared out of boxes and drinks loaded with sugar.

I hope that we are all as reasonable as to what we give our kids after they're born as before they're born KWIM?
