Is this normal or is this a sign she may need help--like cutting?

She is having a fit as I type this and is purposly biting her hand..sometimes it leaves horrible red marks.

I've never read this in books before.

A lot of babies bite themselves, pick their ears, bang their heads, etc. It's just how they express themselves at this stage and is probably nothing to worry about.

Why do they do this when it hurts them? Don't they feel the pain?

alot of babies/toddlers do it for exactly that reason, to feel the pain. they're getting used to sensations, and testing it.. Although, she can also just be doing it because she's throwing a fit and its what she thinks to do..

Wouldn't hurt to bring it up to your pedi though..and it shouldn't be the same as cutting because she is too little to know that what she is doing is bad for her.

Camden pulls his hair really hard sometimes and leaves red marks. It sounds similar and i've never understood why he does it.

I am totally NOT knowledgable on this at all. But I would think that once it got to a certain level of pain they'd stop. Surely they would only be willing to tolerate a certain amt before stopping.

I wonder if it's teething related...Melodie will suck her thumb so hard at night when she's teething it's all red and sometimes almost bloody.

My kids have all done things similar to this. All the Drs I have talked to about it say that it is just a stage kids go through.

Rachel just started doing this too...she'll bite her arm and leave teeth marks! She doesn't do it when shes' mad though, just randomly throughout the day...so I'm assuming it has something to do with teething maybe?

maybe they're trying to trick their brain by diverting their pain to another body part for a while because their teeth hurt so bad? or just need to apply pressure on those little swollen gums to help soothe themselves? poor babies...
